Highlights from the "Ghost Whisperer" press room:
Christoph Sanders on moving forward five years: "This season I'll be playing my own age. I've never played my own age. Last season I was playing younger, and this season [Ned's] coming back, [he's] in college now and it's jumped five years. I'm studying the paranormal, Eli's one of the teachers... we're studying the Book of Secrets. There's a lot of things that are coming together. With Love's new son on the show we're working on like how powerful he'll be and what kind of powers he'll have. We don't know yet."
Camryn Manheim on her love interests this season: "[Ned] and I are dating. Not each other. [Laughs.] That's a bad quote isn't it? Because all you have to do is put, 'They're both dating...' The first episode you come out, just you know, swapping spit with someone [or] the second episode. And the first episode, Delia, all she's doing is text messaging the 60 suitors she's planning on dating. She's really into it. We have lived together for 20 something years now, and all of a sudden he's bringing girls home and I'm bringing guys home and it's a weird, different dynamic."
Camryn Manheim on how Jamie Kennedy has changed since dating Jennifer Love Hewitt: "A little has changed on set. Before they were an item, Jamie was an uncontrolled goofball, like a clown. And I think that now that he's dating the star he's just taken it back slightly, but he's still a big, lovey puppy delish... It's not a distraction at all, it's kind of nice. It's almost quieter and more manageable. He used to really bounce, if you had a trapeze in the studio, Jamie might have been on it... I think they are [good for each other]. He's the best, he's the nicest. It's kind of great that they're so in love, it's nice. There's nothing bad about love."
P.K. Simonds on what's ahead this season: "The quick answer is... it's about the child, about the baby. And we heard at the end of last season that this is a special child with special gifts that are at least equal to hers and probably much greater and we're going to find out this season that they are in fact much greater. And what that does for us is it just opens up a lot of doors. We're going to have stories, we're going to have things that this child is able to see or sense that Melinda never knew were there. And those things are both miraculous and friendly and wonderful and also terrifying and very dangerous. And so what that does is it gives you a lot of really exciting storytelling.
And it also does an interesting thing for her character and David Conrad's character, Jim: they're now parents. But they're parents like any of us who take the parenting role very seriously and we want our children to be safe and contribute to the world but this is a child who because of his gifts has a great responsibility. But she understands because she's had this responsibility, only his is possibly even greater than hers. So what that does is she now has this, she's got to be the right kind of mom to this very, very special child who has a very important role to play in keeping the world, their world safe from a new kind of threat.
Ian Sander on what else is in the works: "We have a video game that's going to come out this year. We have trading cards that are being sold here. The video game is coming out I think the first quarter of '10. We're going to hit our 100th episode this season, which is kind of great particularly if you have a kid in private school as we all do. [Laughs.] We just launched a widget that we're going to be able to latch onto that will hopefully will make the audience grow even more... Most importantly is that when the show took a big leap last year obviously one hopes that it's going to do what it ultimately did do. We take that responsibility seriously going into the fifth year that we'll take some big leaps again. And hopefully it will grow that much more. We're not finished telling stories yet."
Kim Moses on the show's ancillary offerings: "You can watch the show in two ways. You can watch as the traditional television viewer where you see what [Melinda] does and take that journey through her eyes and also the parallel track that we've created, which is a new universe where 'Ghost Whisperer' over the last four years, where the audience can, we look at it as the 'Ghost Whisperer' playground where the audience can pick and choose what experiences they have, whether it's on the internet or interactive DVDs or all of the things that Ian said that they have. [It's] very much a 21st century journey."
Ian Sander on the show's web component: "We will be doing another web series this season too. It will be our fourth installment of 'The Other Side,' which will be another web series that we're going to launch this season."
Ian Sander on guest stars this season: "We're just starting our third episode, shooting our third episode. We have Barry Newman who's going to play Eli's father in the show. Barry Bostwick plays his best friend but we expect there to be a lot of exciting casting as the season goes on."
Ian Sander on if they're cutting back on special effects this year: "Not true. Anybody who told you that is not telling the truth. The show was just nominated for a visual effects Emmy, we were nominated for a music Emmy [for] Mark Snow and we know where our bread is buttered. [Laughs.]"
