JIM CARREY PLAYS A LAWYER WHO CANNOT TELL A LIE IN THE HILARIOUS COMEDY,
"LIAR LIAR," ON "ABC'S SATURDAY MOVIE OF THE WEEK," OCTOBER 9,
Critically acclaimed actor and comic superstar Jim Carrey plays a lawyer who cannot tell a lie in the hilarious and zany comedy for the whole family, "Liar Liar," airing as a presentation of "ABC Saturday Movie of the Week," SATURDAY, OCTOBER 9 (8:00-10:00 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network. (Rebroadcast. OAD: 2/14/00).
Fletcher Reede (Jim Carrey, "The Majestic," "How the Grinch Stole Christmas") is a smooth-talking, successful lawyer and habitual liar whose over-the-top court performances and "little" white lies have won him many cases. For Fletcher, lying is a part of normal court proceedings; and his demanding and seductive boss, Miranda (Amanda Donohoe, "Wild About Harry") is counting on him to rack up his court victories with a promise to make him partner at the firm. But Fletcher's lying is not winning him any cases at home -- especially with his vulnerable, adoring young son, Max (Justin Cooper, "Dennis the Menace Strikes Again"), and his ex-wife, Audrey (Maura Tierney, "Oxygen," television's "ER"), who still harbors some feelings for Fletcher. Fletcher disappoints Max so much with his many excuses for not spending time with him that Audrey plans to relocate the family and marry her dull but nice boyfriend, Jerry (Cary Elwes, "Wish You Were Dead," "Princess Bride"). When Fletcher lies to Max again about his reason for not coming to his fifth birthday party, Max is heartbroken. As he blows out the candles on his birthday cake, he makes a wish that his father cannot tell a lie for 24 hours. Magically, his wish comes true and it throws Fletcher's life into a comic tailspin!
For an entire day, Fletcher is forced to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, and it gets him into some hilarious predicaments. Fletcher cannot lie about what he really thinks of his colleagues, especially his boss, Miranda. He can't make up reasons for avoiding his phone calls. And in his biggest case yet, Fletcher has to figure out a way to defend his latest client -- Samantha Cole (Jennifer Tilly, television's "The Magnificent Ambersons," "Inside Job"), a gold-digging, unfaithful wife who's trying to win a big settlement from the millionaire she's divorcing -- without resorting to lying. Along the way, Fletcher realizes the importance of his family, but it may be too late -- Max and Audrey are moving east to start a new life without him. With his career and family on the line, Fletcher must come up with a way to win his case and his family back; and ultimately learns the power of telling the truth.
"Liar Liar" also features Swoosie Kurtz ("Bubble Boy," "Cruel Intentions") as the no-nonsense prosecutor, Dana Appleton; and Cheri Oteri ("Scary Movie," "Saturday Night Live") as Jane, one of Fletcher's colleagues.
"Liar Liar" was directed by Tom Shadyac ("Patch Adams," "The Nutty Professor") from a screenplay written by Paul Guay and Stephen Mazur ("Heartbreakers"). It was a 1997 Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment Production and was distributed by Universal Pictures. (CLOSED-CAPTIONED) (Broadcast in stereo where available)
