"60 MINUTES WEDNESDAY" REVEALS THE PRIVATE SIDE
OF JOHNNY CARSON IN ONE OF HIS ONLY TELEVISION PROFILES -- ON CBS
Report Includes Material Not Seen In The Original 60 MINUTES Report About Smoking
Johnny Carson may have been one of the most private of public figures, but that all changed when the late-night legend gave in to a request from one of his own guests -- Mike Wallace. Carson, a fan of 60 MINUTES, granted one of his only television interviews to Wallace in 1979. The rare interview, which features footage which was not included in the original 60 MINUTES report, will be broadcast on 60 MINUTES WEDNESDAY (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) Jan. 26 on the CBS Television Network.
The notoriously private Carson told Wallace 25 years ago that he felt guilty about his tobacco habit a habit which eventually led to his death. "I feel guiltyit's compulsive. I should go to one of those places where they shock you or do something or show you old reruns of 'Gilligan's Island' to make you give up smoking."
During the 60 MINUTES profile, Carson revealed more of himself than he'd ever done before on television. "Johnny Carson stands with the Ayatollah Khomeini and Vladimir Horowitz among my favorite interviews," says Wallace. "He was a fan of 60 MINUTES. He invited me on his show and on the show I said, 'Why don't you do ours?'"
Jeff Fager is the executive producer of the 60 MINUTES WEDNESDAY and Debbie DeLuca is the producer of this report.
