IN AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH DIANE SAWYER, SUPERMODEL PETRA NEMCOVA TALKS ABOUT HER HARROWING FIGHT FOR SURVIVAL AND LOSING THE LOVE OF HER LIFE
"Amazing Grace: A Story of Terror, Survival and Heartbreak"
-- A Special Edition of "Primetime Live" -- Airs Wednesday, March 9 on ABC
In her first television interview since narrowly escaping death in the Southeast Asia tsunami, model Petra Nemcova shares the details of her harrowing survival story with Diane Sawyer and talks about the heartbreaking loss of her boyfriend. Nemcova avoided being swept away by clinging to a palm tree for eight hours, but was left badly injured with a shattered pelvis and internal injuries. Nemcova's boyfriend, British photographer Simon Atlee, is still missing and presumed dead. During the highly emotional interview, the 25-year-old Nemcova explains to Sawyer how this ordeal forever changed her perspective on life and why Atlee's memory continues to inspire her. "Amazing Grace: A Story of Terror, Survival and Heartbreak" -- a special edition of "Primetime Live" -- airs WEDNESDAY, MARCH 9 (10:00-11:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.
Nemcova describes the horror of the devastating first wave hitting the small cabana she and Atlee shared. And she relates the powerful story of how she managed to survive - despite enduring the unbearable pain of crushed bones, baking in the merciless sun and nearly drowning -- both through her own sheer will and the courageous efforts of others. Nemcova says she marvels at how this calamity brought out the best in people, heroes willing to risk their lives to help others when all else was lost.
Nemcova speaks at length about Atlee, a man she says loved life and making others laugh - and who was the ultimate romantic. She tells Sawyer that although "Siddy" is gone, his friends and family continue to feel his presence in their lives.
Nemcova also talks with Sawyer about her dramatic rise from a childhood living under a Communist regime - when she had to wait in lines for food - to life as one of the world's most famous faces. Sawyer asks Nemcova, who had reached the top of the modeling world when disaster struck, whether she plans to ever appear before the cameras again.
DIANE SAWYER, CHRIS CUOMO, CYNTHIA MCFADDEN and JOHN QUIQONES are the anchors of "Primetime Live." SHELLEY ROSS is the executive producer.
