It was a crime that rocked California wine country, a brutal double murder in the heart of idyllic Napa Valley. Two young women, Adriane Insogna and Leslie Mazzara, were fatally stabbed on Halloween night in their rental house, a scene straight out of a horror movie. Their roommate, Lauren (who has asked that her last name be withheld), was sleeping downstairs and was somehow spared. While Lauren fled in panic and called 9-1-1, the killer vanished unseen. In an exclusive �Primetime� interview with John Quinones, Lauren talks for the first time about that terrible night and how she lived in fear for almost a year, until something she suddenly remembered helped end a frustrating hunt for the killer. �Primetime� airs THURSDAY, OCTOBER 6 (10:00-11:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.

Also: Paula Paine seemed to be living a charmed life in Houston�s social scene, but in truth she was living a double life. She explains to Jim Avila how her anxieties and issues about her past led to an unusual release � shoplifting. It began with a pair of sunglasses and soon, Paine says, she couldn�t stop, even though she knew her actions were wrong. Next she was shoplifting higher priced items and even stealing from friends. Psychiatrists are taking a closer look at shoplifters like Paine to determine whether stealing, like gambling or alcoholism, may actually be an addiction that can serve as a coping mechanism of sorts.

John Grant, a psychiatrist at the University of Minnesota, has studied kleptomania for seven years and believes many people suffer in silence. �So many of these people have no other problems in their lives,� he tells Avila. �They�re successful. They�re business people. They run families. They run companies. And yet this part of their lives is completely out of control, and they�re bewildered about why that�s the case.� Dr. Grant conducted the first-ever brain scans on kleptomaniacs. The results, seen for the first time on �Primetime,� are revealing. Also, a reformed shoplifter gives Avila a lesson on theft that sheds light on what goes through the minds of shoplifters when they�re committing the crime.

Shoplifting costs an estimated $10.5 billion in losses to retailers a year. Non-professional addicted shoplifters -- people who steal once a week or more -- account for the vast majority of retail losses.
