INDICTED HEWLETT-PACKARD EX-CHAIRWOMAN PATRICIA DUNN SAYS EVERY COMPANY HAS CORPORATE INVESTIGATIONS THAT ARE INTRUSIVE -- "60 MINUTES"

In an interview a few hours after learning she was indicted for authorizing an investigation of her board of directors, ex-Hewlett-Packard Chairwoman Patricia Dunn says such intrusive investigations are the norm in the corporate world. Dunn spoke yesterday(4) to Lesley Stahl in San Jose, Calif., for an interview to be broadcast on 60 MINUTES, Sunday Oct. 8 (7:00-8:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

Excerpts will also appear this evening (5) on the CBS EVENING NEWS WITH KATIE COURIC.

"Every company has investigations. Investigations, by their nature, are intrusive," Dunn tells Stahl. "If you think that Hewlett Packard is the only company that has an investigations force, which by the way, is peopled mostly with former law enforcement officers that do all kinds of private detective work, monitoring, posing as other people in order to solve problems to protect shareholder value, you're being nave," says Dunn.

When pressed by Stahl about the investigation being of her own company's board, Dunn shoots back, "At the request of this board to solve a serious problem."

Dunn says she is innocent of the charges she and four others connected to the case are facing: using false pretenses to obtain confidential information from a public utility, unauthorized access of computer data, identity theft and conspiracy. She admits she's not sure what's next. "I know the complaint has been filed and I know that I am going to be following a path to defend myself," she tells Stahl. But at this instant, it's just a couple hours since [the prosecutor] made his announcement.

"Maybe someone will come in here while we're talking and put handcuffs on me. I don't know," says Dunn.
