TED KENNEDY'S SON SPEAKS ABOUT HIS LATE FATHER IN AN EXTENDED INTERVIEW FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE HE DIED, EXPRESSING ANXIETY OVER THE BULLET-PROOF VESTS HIS FATHER KEPT -- "60 MINUTES" SUNDAY

Sen. Edward Kennedy's son speaks about his late father in an extended interview for the first time since he died, expressing the anxiety he and his siblings felt over the bullet-proof vests in their father's closet. Ted Kennedy, Jr., speaks to Lesley Stahl for a report which also includes un-released footage from Sen. Kennedy's last videotaped interview. Stahl's report will be broadcast on 60 MINUTES Sunday, Sept. 13 (7:00-8:00PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television network.

"Most people keep coats and umbrellas in their coat closet. My father kept bullet-proof vests in his coat closet," the senator's son tells Stahl. "Believe me, we would walk past that coat closet every day, fearful about some crazy person out there wanting to make a name for themselves and that, I think, was in the back of our minds almost every time that my father would appear in public," says Kennedy. Kennedy says his father never stopped trying to make up for the mistakes he made in his life and that the letter he wrote to the pope, made public at his death, was a final appeal for forgiveness. "His letter to the pope...just a few short weeks ago...every time I read that letter I cry because he's asking for forgiveness," he tells Stahl.

Stahl also interviews Jonathan Karp, the editor and publisher who worked closely with the late senator on his memoir, True Compass. Karp arranged a videotaped interview with Kennedy before he died. An excerpt from the video, none of which has been made public, will appear on 60 MINUTES.

In it, Sen. Kennedy talks about the heart-to-heart talk his father, Joseph P. Kennedy, had with him as a young man regarding his future in the Kennedy family. "I had a sit-down with my dad. He said �Now Teddy, you have to make up your mind whether you want to have a constructive and positive attitude and influence on your time and if you are not interested, I just want you to know that I have other children that intend to have a purposeful and constructive life....' It was very clear to me what kind of life I wanted to lead."
