SPECIAL EDITION OF "60 MINUTES" ON MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND FEATURES RARE VIDEO OF BAGRAM AIR BASE TRIBUTE TO FALLEN SOLDIERS - SUNDAY AT 8 PM
A special edition of 60 MINUTES on Memorial Day weekend will feature rare video of a tribute to fallen soldiers at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan. It will be contained in a segment about the war in Afghanistan to be broadcast Sunday, May 30 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.
The footage shows the coffins of Air Force 1st Lt. Roslyn Schulte and Shawn Pine, an Army reservist, both killed by the same roadside bomb, being saluted by hundreds of service members as their bodies are transported to a waiting flight back to the U.S. The private footage videotaped by the military one year ago was recently obtained by 60 MINUTES from the family of Lt. Schulte. It will be broadcast as part of an update to a segment about "Task Force Paladin," a bomb disposal unit that Byron Pitts and 60 MINUTES cameras spent a week with last year. The story traces the movements of the all-volunteer unit as it hunts improvised explosive devices, or IEDs, of the kind that killed Schulte and Pine and that are responsible for most of 130-plus American deaths in the Afghanistan War so far this year.
The segment, called "The Deadliest Weapon," will also include memorial footage shot earlier this month at Task Force Paladins home base, Eglin Air Force Base in the Florida Panhandle.
