In His First Interview, a Former Kony Commander Says His Troops Called U.S. Aircraft Overhead "Obama"

In the end, it was information from people who knew him that led to the killing of Osama bin Laden. It will be the same for African warlord Joseph Kony, says a U.S. Special Forces colonel who had been helping African armies search for the militant known for kidnapping children to man his marauding army. Col. Kurt Crytzer speaks to Lara Logan for her report from the jungles of the Central African Republic, where the world's most wanted warlord may be hiding. Her story will be broadcast on 60 MINUTES, Sunday, April 14 (7:00-8:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

The area Kony and his cult-like army are hiding in is so vast, intelligence will be critical in finding him. Crytzer's soldiers build relationships with villagers where Kony has been or might go to in the future. "If you think about our experiences with Osama bin Laden, we had some of the best platforms in the world flying in all the wrong places for eight years," he tells Logan. "In the end, it was human intelligence that led to him. In the end, it's going to be human intelligence here that leads to Joseph Kony," says Crytzer.

Kony and his "Lord's Resistance Army" have been at large for more than 25 years. They're known for abducting children from schools and villages and enslaving them for sexual and military roles. In an interview with recently rescued former child soldiers, the young men reveal to Logan that they were forced to punish any new abductees who tried to escape by "biting them to death," a startling revelation about the methods of this brutal army. Watch an excerpt. Kony uses a blend of religion and mysticism to hold sway over the children, some of whom, if they don't die in battle, live to become adults and sometimes officers.

Maj. Gen. Caesar Acellam is the highest-ranking LRA member to be captured. In his first major interview, he says he was with Kony for 20 years and acknowledged participating in the horrors perpetrated by the group. "There were a number of things that you might not have wanted to do. But you do it," Acellam says. "All these people were doing atrocities� under Kony's instruction."

A former child soldier tells Logan why he followed Kony. "We were told this was God's war, so out of fear of God, I believed everything I was told, and I followed."

The U.S. has aircraft in the skies over Africa, searching for terrorists. Accelam says when he was with Kony and they spotted aircraft above, they had a name for it. "Overhead, we call that Obama."
