Including the First "60 Minutes" Stories of Steve Kroft and Lesley Stahl
America's most-watched news program begins its 47th season with a report from Iraq on the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, the terrorist group that's grabbed the world's attention, and the story of an enormous scam against the IRS that's siphoning billions from taxpayers. The 47th season premiere of 60 MINUTES will be broadcast on Sunday, Sept. 21 (7:30-8:30 PM, ET/7:00-8:00 PM, PT) on the CBS Television Network.
Scott Pelley goes to the heart of the fighting against ISIS in the northern regions of Iraq, where he speaks with Kurdish Peshmerga fighters who have battled ISIS, a detained ISIS member and some of the terrorist group's innocent victims. Then, Steve Kroft finds out how easy it is for con men to use stolen Social Security numbers to secure fraudulent tax refunds - a multi-billion-dollar scam the government admits it hasn't figured out how to stop.
Online, 60MinutesOvertime.com will offer new, original web exclusives that take viewers behind the scenes each week. The webcast invites viewers to share moments and footage not seen on the broadcast and provides the perspectives of the correspondents and producers who report the stories.
The award-winning 60 MINUTES app for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch expands its archive to more than 300 stories, adding 60 more stories that span the decades, including the first episode of 60 MINUTES in 1968. The new material includes the first Steve Kroft and Lesley Stahl stories ever to appear on the broadcast, plus classics from Mike Wallace, Morley Safer, Ed Bradley and Scott Pelley.
For the first time this season, 60 MINUTES episodes will be available on mobile devices during the week following their broadcast with no app purchase necessary.
Last season, 60 MINUTES averaged 12.2 million viewers each Sunday, and regularly made Nielsen's Top 10 List. The most honored broadcast in television added more awards for its stories over the past year, including six Emmys, two Edward R. Murrow Awards and a du Pont Columbia University Award.
CBS News Chairman Jeff Fager is the executive producer of 60 MINUTES; Bill Owens is the executive editor of 60 MINUTES and 60 MinutesOvertime.com.
