A FLORIDA WOMAN WITHSTANDS A BRUTAL ATTACK TO FIND TRUE LOVE - THE REAL STORY OF A SURVIVOR AND THE HERO EMT THAT HELPED SAVE HER LIFE IN "48 HOURS: LIVE TO TELL: ONE LAST HUG"
Tuesday, June 16, 2015 at 10:00 PM, ET/PT
Melissa Dohme agreed to meet a former boyfriend for one last hug before they broke up forever. In an instant, she was stabbed 32 times and left for dead. She didn't die thanks to a hero EMT who helped save her life and her heart. Dohme recounts her fight to live, and a remarkable fairytale twist in an updated edition of 48 HOURS: LIVE TO TELL: "One Last Hug" to be broadcast June 16, 2015 (10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.
Anchored by Troy Roberts, 48 HOURS: LIVE TO TELL: "One Last Hug" is the inspiring story of one woman's battle back from a brutal attack, how she found a purpose in life and how she found love in the arms of the man who made sure she did not die.
"I never want another girl to go through what I went through," Dohme tells 48 HOURS in this updated encore broadcast. "There is help out there, and you can get through it."
Like many, Dohme, then 20, struggled to end an abusive relationship. Her relationship with ex-boyfriend Robert Lee Burton, Jr. started out lovingly before turning bad. There were signals, she says, noting an incident before the knife attack where he tried to strangle her. But it was the decision to meet Burton on Jan. 24, 2012 for a final goodbye would change her life forever.
"I heard a click, I didn't know what the sound was - he just started stabbing me with that knife," Dohme tells 48 HOURS.
"He said that he just wanted a hug, that's all he wanted," she says. "A final goodbye - all he wanted was closure. And I basically walked outside to my own murder."
A police officer responding to the scene had never seen so much blood and didn't believe Dohme would survive until EMS arrived. She was flown by helicopter to a local trauma center, where her heart stopped multiple times. Police, EMS, doctors and Dohme's family describe learning of the attack, her treatment and the hunt for her attacker. Dohme also relives the troubled relationship, her miraculous recovery, facing Burton in court, and how this horrific event led her to find true love with EMT Cameron Hill.
"And there is life after abuse," Dohme tells 48 HOURS. "There's a wonderful life out there for you."
"Everything that happened and all the bad stuff doesn't matter," Dohme adds. "It's all gone, replaced with wonderful, loving, happy great memories of Cameron and a future together that, you know, the possibilities are endless."
