TROY ROBERTS ANCHORS BACK-TO-BACK EDITIONS OF "48 HOURS" FEATURING TWIST-FILLED INVESTIGATIONS INTO MYSTERIOUS DEATHS
Troy Roberts anchors investigations into two mysterious deaths featuring intriguing plot twists, talk of unrequited love and unanswered questions in a Saturday night 48 HOURS double feature to be broadcast Saturday, August 1 (9:00-11:00 PM) on the CBS Television Network.
At 9:00 PM, Roberts and 48 HOURS report on an investigation into an unsolved triple murder in an encore of "Murder in Pinyon Pines." On Sept. 17, 2006, Becky Friedli was found burning in a wheelbarrow outside of her home in Pinyon Pines, Calif. Inside, her mother and her mother's boyfriend were shot dead and the home set afire. Seven years later, two men were arrested and charged with murder. But an unexpected courtroom twist turned the case upside-down. The District Attorney said there was an "issue" in the grand jury proceeding against one of the men, and dropped the charges for both. What really happened in Pinyon Pines?
And at 10:00 PM, in an encore of "Fall from Grace," Roberts and 48 HOURS investigate the death of Bethany Deaton, a young wife and a successful nurse with a bright future, who in October 2012 was found dead by law enforcement in Grandview, Mo., in the backseat of a minivan. She had plastic bag on her head. A suicide note was nearby along with an empty bottle of over-the-counter sleeping pills.
The story behind Deaton's death includes a fundamentalist Christian religious group some likened to a cult, and a dream marriage to the group's leader, Tyler Deaton, that quickly turned into a nightmare. Police didn't believe Bethany killed herself, because the way she was found didn't fit the pattern of someone taking their own life. Officials thought they had the case solved when a member of the religious group confessed to killing Bethany. However, he later recanted his story and was released, leaving unanswered the question of what exactly happened to Bethany Deaton.
