"48 HOURS" INVESTIGATES TWO BIZARRE CASES THAT TAKE VIEWERS INSIDE THE MINDS OF SUSPECTS IN A SATURDAY NIGHT DOUBLE FEATURE

9:00 PM "48 HOURS: LIVE TO TELL: THE BIRTHDAY PARTY"

10:00 PM "48 HOURS: ROAD TO REDEMPTION"

48 HOURS investigates two bizarre cases that take viewers inside the minds of suspects involved in attempted murder and murder, in a Saturday night double feature to be broadcast Saturday, Dec. 24 (9:00 PM and 10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

On Jan. 21, 1998, the night before his 38th birthday, federal prosecutor Stanley Alpert was walking home in lower Manhattan, when he was kidnapped at gunpoint, triggering a 25-hour hostage ordeal which would range from the horrific to the oddly humorous. Alpert recounts the bizarre events of his kidnapping - from his abduction to his release - in an encore of LIVE TO TELL, "The Birthday Party," to be broadcast at 9:00 PM.

Intent on stealing $50,000 from his bank account, Alpert's kidnappers, nicknamed Sen, Ren and Lucky, blindfolded him and drove him to Brooklyn, where he was kept in an apartment full of gun-wielding young men and prostitutes. Alpert spent his entire birthday in captivity, as his captors alternated between violent threats, friendly requests for legal advice and offers of celebratory marijuana and sexual favors. Although Alpert was blindfolded he caught glimpses of his whereabouts and memorized key details about his kidnappers. Those clues ultimately led to the arrest of his captors.

At 10:00 PM, Maureen Maher and 48 HOURS report on Jeanne Bishop, who, for two decades, struggled to understand why her sister and brother-in-law were murdered by an intruder who shot both of them in their suburban Chicago home in 1990, in an encore of "Road to Redemption." Would going face-to-face with the shooter to get those answers - and forgive him along the way - help her heal?

Nancy and Richard Langert were found dead on Palm Sunday in the basement of their Winnetka, Ill., home. There was money strewn nearby as if they offered it for their lives. Their killer was identified months later as David Biro, a local high school student, who bragged to a friend he did it.

"Road to Redemption" is a story of love, loss, what happens to a family ripped apart by tragedy, and the struggle for survivors to move on after losing loved ones to a killer.

In late 1991, Biro, who was 16 at the time of the murders, was tried as an adult and convicted of murder. He was sentenced to two mandatory life terms for the murders of the Langerts, and the judge gave him a discretionary life sentence for the death of their unborn child.

For many families, that's when the healing begins. Not for Bishop. She couldn't move on because she needed to know what motivated Biro to kill. Bishop's quest to get closure and to forgive took her to Biro. What happened next surprised everyone.
