48 HOURS: "The Accidental Husband" - Harold Henthorn has lost two wives in unusual accidents. Does Henthorn have horrible luck, or is there something more going on behind the deaths? Peter Van Sant and 48 HOURS investigate Henthorn's story in an encore of "The Accidental Husband" to be broadcast at 9:00 PM, ET/PT, on the CBS Television Network.

It's a case that exposes what family members say is a controlling husband, a double life and a past that is not what it seems.

In September 2012, Henthorn surprised his wife, Dr. Toni Henthorn, with a hike in Rocky Mountain National Park to celebrate their 12th anniversary. However, something went wrong when, according to Henthorn, Toni fell to her death. Toni's family says Henthorn's version of what happened changed several times. What is known for sure is Toni Henthorn fell 140 feet to her death. Exactly how she fell is a mystery.

While Toni's family struggled to come to terms with the death, reporter Brian Maass got an email tip that would make everyone reconsider Henthorn's version of what he said happened to Toni. "It was very cryptic," Maass says. "It just said: Harold Henthorn, his first wife died in a freak accident as well."

Maass learned her name was Lynn and that she had died 17 years earlier. Henthorn told investigators then that while the couple was out, he pulled over to the side of the road with a soft tire. He told them that while he was changing the tire, Lynn dropped a lug nut under the car. As she reached to grab it, the jack slipped and she was crushed by their Jeep. She died hours later. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office ruled the death an accident.

Two years after investigating Toni's fall - and looking into the mysterious death of Lynn - federal authorities arrested and charged Henthorn with Toni's murder.

48 HOURS: "Blood in the Sand" - The murder of two teenaged girls on the same California beach six years apart shocked residents around San Diego when it happened. What DNA uncovered in the case decades later would stun them a second time.

Richard Schlesinger and 48 HOURS investigate the two murders, the incredible similarities in the cases and the new technology that would lead police to investigate one of their own in this encore of "Blood in the Sand" to be broadcast at 10:00 PM, ET/PT, on the CBS Television Network.

In August 1978, 15-year-old Barbara Nantais was murdered on Torrey Pines State Beach. She'd gone camping with boyfriend Jim Alt. She was sexually assaulted, beaten, strangled and mutilated. Alt was beaten and was in a coma for days. Then in August 1984, 14-year-old Claire Hough was found murdered on the same beach. She, too, had been sexually assaulted, beaten, strangled and mutilated in a strikingly similar way.

Was there a serial killer targeting teenaged girls, or was there a copycat?

Police had few clues to go on but they were convinced the cases were connected. The cases went cold until 2012, when police got hits on DNA they had from Hough's crime scene. What the test revealed, however, was unexpected. It indicated one of the suspects was a man who had worked as a criminalist in the San Diego police crime lab - someone who at one time was nicknamed "Kinky" and was known to frequent strip clubs and participate in risqué photo shoots.

But the man once nicknamed "Kinky" wasn't the only suspect.

Could the newfound DNA solve the case that troubled police and residents for decades? Or would it lead to a bigger mystery?
