In 2011, the FBI became aware of an online black market website, the Silk Road, where users could buy and sell goods, including illegal drugs and weapons. Even murders for hire were offered. The site was run by an individual known only as the Dread Pirate Roberts, named after a character from the classic film "The Princess Bride." An elite FBI cyber taskforce worked to infiltrate the site and identify its founder: Ross Ulbricht, a 29-year-old computer science engineer.
Now, members of that team take viewers inside the multi-agency investigation that led to his arrest in THE FBI DECLASSIFIED: "Dangerous Journey on the Silk Road" to be broadcast Tuesday, Nov. 10 (10:00-11:00 PM) on the CBS Television Network.
The Silk Road, accessed anonymously by users on the dark web, brought in approximately $1 billion in sales, according to investigators, with Ulbricht making millions by taking a cut of each transaction.
"Silk Road was the Amazon of drug sites," says FBI Special Agent Milan Patel.
Narrated by Alana De La Garza from CBS' drama series FBI, "Dangerous Journey on The Silk Road," follows the investigation that led FBI agents from Iceland to New York to San Francisco in search of the shadowy figure behind the website.
"They trafficked in - anything you could get in the black market - poisons, things like that," says Vinny D'Agostino, an FBI agent with the Cyber Division.
"Silk Road took drug trafficking into the 21st century," says D'Agostino. "This was so easily accessible that it ended up getting into the hands of people that never really would have touched it."
That, D'Agostino says, led to overdoses and deaths.
Julia Vie, Ulbricht's former girlfriend, says he wanted to create a free market website where users could avoid government scrutiny.
"He had designed everything, he'd figured out the system. He was excited," Vie says in a rare interview.
As the business grew Vie says Ulbricht became frightened.
"He was scared. He was really scared. He was like, 'I think I'm going to go to jail forever for this,'" Vie says.
THE FBI DECLASSIFIED features FBI agents and analysts taking viewers behind the scenes of some of the biggest cases they've solved during their careers. Through never-before-seen footage and in-depth interviews, each episode will focus on a different investigation and showcase the cooperation between the FBI and other law enforcement agencies.
"This is the future of crime," Patel says. "It just happens to be on the internet."
