A WOMAN CLAIMS THE FAMILY DOG KILLED HER EX-HUSBAND - WHEN POLICE ARRIVE, THEY FIND NO SIGNS OF THE MAN, OR THE DOG - WHAT WAS SHE HIDING?
"48 Hours" Investigates in "The Killing of Cowboy Ray Green"
Saturday, April 24
Dani Green told family and friends that her ex-husband Ray Green was killed by the family dog, a German Shepherd named Jazzy. However, when police showed up at the couple's home in Dillsboro, Ind., they found no signs of her ex-husband - or the dog. Was she hiding something?
Correspondent Peter Van Sant and 48 HOURS investigate the disappearance of Ray Green and the case against Dani Green in "The Killing of Cowboy Ray Green" to be broadcast Saturday, April 24 (10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.
The bizarre story unfolded in May 2014. On the outside, the Greens seemed like they had a happy marriage. Both horse trainers, they loved animals. They even relocated to Palm Beach, Fla., for a time so Dani could pursue her dream of competing in Olympic dressage. They both enjoyed a different kind of competition as well - Cowboy Action Shooting, a sport where participants dress in Old West period clothing and target shoot for speed and accuracy. Players even take on fun aliases and the Greens had their own: Doc R Green and Dani Oakley.
"They seemed like to me the perfect couple," says friend Karen Auclair. "But, you know, you never know what's going on in a relationship."
After Dani Green told family and friends Ray was killed by the dog, some grew suspicious. Ray's 84-year-old mother Betty asked police to check on her son. When they arrived, Dani changed her story, saying Ray, who sometimes worked as a truck driver, was on the road.
"The problem with that, there was a big truck in the property," says prosecutor Aaron Negangard. "The officers were suspicious that something was up. So, the officers pinged his phone. And his phone came back to that piece of property."
Dani gave police consent to search anywhere on the property - except for a big, padlocked toolbox.
What happened to Ray Green? Where was Jazzy? Did the toolbox somehow hold clues to his fate?
Van Sant and 48 HOURS report on the couple's fate through interviews with his family, friends, investigators and more. 48 HOURS: "The Killing of Cowboy Green" is produced by Susan Mallie and Jennifer Terker.
