Logline: An astonishing attack and an unbelievable motive: How did a sleepover end in attempted murder to please the fictional character Slender Man? "IMPACT x Nightline" unpacks the case after a new court ruling changes everything for one of the assailants.
Extended Logline: In 2014, a sleepover between 12-year-olds Morgan Geyser, Anissa Weier and Payton Leutner ended in attempted murder to please the fictional character Slender Man. Geyser and her co-assailant, Weier, stabbed Leutner 19 times. Leutner survived her life-threatening injuries while Geyser and Weier were charged in adult court with first-degree attempted intentional homicide. Geyser pleaded guilty to the charge, and Weier pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of attempted second-degree intentional homicide. After their convictions, they were sentenced to 40 and 25 years, respectively, in a psychiatric institution after they were both found not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect. After petitioning the court, Weier was granted conditional release in 2021. Last month, Geyser was also granted conditional release after petitioning the court. Now, "IMPACT x Nightline" reports on the latest in Geyser's case ahead of her forthcoming release from Wisconsin's Winnebago Mental Health Institute.
