The WB Gears Up for May Sweeps

CHICAGO (thefutoncritic.com) -- The WB has announced its May sweeps plans, which feature everything from the series finale of "Angel" to the launch of the new reality series "Superstar U.S.A."

Here's the network's schedule for the period, compiled from various press materials:

The WB Network's May sweep will feature the premiere of an outrageous reality series, the heroic conclusion of a critically acclaimed dramatic series and original episodes of the network's comedies and dramas.

On Monday, May 17, THE WB'S SUPERSTAR USA will begin its search for performers who have the determination and drive to make it as a singing sensation, even if they lack the voice. Executive producer Mike Fleiss ("The Bachelor," "The Bachelorette") and The WB Network are unleashing an off-key send-up of a tried-and-true reality format on the American public. The show will be hosted by MTV vee-jay Brian McFayden and will feature performance critiques by industry experts Vitamin C, Tone-Loc and television producer Chris Briggs. The series will air on Mondays and Tuesdays for three consecutive weeks. The last singer standing will be THE WB'S SUPERSTAR USA and will receive cash, as well as a talent and recording contract.

Other Monday highlights include the May 3 episode of 7TH HEAVEN when Ruthie (Mackenzie Rosman) and Peter (Scotty Leavenworth) get lost and cross paths with "Lost Boys" Nicodemus and Jacob, who share the heartbreaking story of their struggle to stay alive during the civil war in Sudan. On May 10, Camden brothers Matt (Barry Watson) and Simon (David Gallagher) return to Glenoak, and in the season finale on May 17, Matt's attempt to salvage his marriage is complicated by his feelings for his ex-girlfriend, Heather (guest star Andrea Ferrell), while Simon's sudden appearance creates conflicted feelings for his ex-girlfriend, Cecilia (Ashlee Simpson).

On the critically acclaimed drama EVERWOOD, Amy (Emily VanCamp) reveals her true feelings for Ephram (Gregory Smith) on May 3, while Andy (Treat Williams) struggles to convince his mentor Dr. Douglas (guest star Philip Baker Hall) that the brain surgery he needs is even riskier than originally thought. The May 10 season finale finds Ephram struggling to reach a decision when Amy asks him to give up a summer session at Julliard to remain in Everwood with her, while Dr. Abbott (Tom Amandes) opens a bagel shop and Andy tries to protect his family from a shocking revelation.

May heats up with the Tuesday night lineup of GILMORE GIRLS and ONE TREE HILL. On GILMORE GIRLS, romance is in the air on May 4, when Luke (Scott Patterson) suddenly realizes that he knows who his soul mate is, while Rory (Alexis Bledel) is very interested in Lorelai's (Lauren Graham) news that she overheard Dean (Jared Padalecki) fighting with his wife. On May 11, Jess (Milo Ventimiglia) returns to Stars Hollow for his mother's (guest star Kathleen Wilhoite) wedding and makes Rory a surprising offer, while and Luke and Lorelai share a romantic dance. On the season finale on May 18, Lorelai realizes that she and Luke may actually be dating, and Rory does her best to salvage her friendship with Dean.

On ONE TREE HILL, Lucas (Chad Michael Murray) is shocked to find out that Dan (Paul Johansson) once asked for joint custody of him, and a kidnapping shocks the town on May 4. On the May 11 season finale, Lucas (Chad Michael Murray) and Nathan (James Lafferty) bear the brunt of Dan's abuse as he coaches them into the playoffs, pushing both of them to their breaking points, and Haley (Bethany Joy Lenz) is stunned after Dan's threats cause her to reconsider her relationship with Nathan.

On Wednesday nights, the epic saga of ANGEL (David Boreanaz), the heroic vampire with a soul, will reach its thrilling conclusion. Leading up to the finale of this critically acclaimed drama, Darla (Julie Benz), Drusilla (Juliet Landau) and Andrew (Tom Lenk) return on May 5 as Angel and Spike (James Marsters) travel to Rome to fight their old nemesis The Immortal. On May 12, Angel carefully sets the stage to bring down the evil empire of the Senior Partners. Finally, the series concludes on May 19 with the violent death of one of Angel's closest friends and the ultimate battle between good and evil.

The Wednesday night action continues on SMALLVILE when series star John Schneider directs an episode that finds Clark (Tom Welling) racing to protect Lionel Luthor (John Glover) from a mythic warrior on May 5. On May 12, Pete (Sam Jones III) is tortured by an FBI agent who is after Clark's secret and, in the season finale on May 19, a beautiful young woman from Krypton comes to lead Clark to his destiny.

On Thursday nights, STEVE HARVEY'S BIG TIME kicks off the sweep on April 29 with a visit from rhythm and blues legend Stevie Wonder. Also on April 29, the riotous season finale of LIKE FAMILY features a huge blowout between Tanya (Holly Robinson Peete) and Maddie (Diane Farr) after Tanya catches Maddie and her ex-husband Roger (guest star David Lee Smith) in bed together. That same night, the season finale of THE JAMIE KENNEDY EXPERIMENT finds Jamie in Miami pulling a fast one on Miami Dolphin player Jay Williams.

The Friday night line-up begins with REBA, starring Golden Globe-nominee Reba McEntire. On April 30, Barbra Jean (Melissa Peterman) comes to Reba for advice when she suspects that Brock (Christopher Rich) is cheating on her, and things turn really ugly on May 7, when Reba and Barbra Jean end up in a bar brawl. Finally, in the season finale on May 14, Barbra Jean is convinced that Brock and Reba are having an affair. On the May 7 season finale of WHAT I LIKE ABOUT YOU, Holly (Amanda Bynes) and Val (Jennie Garth) both face defining moments in their lovelives. On GROUNDED FOR LIFE, Adam Brody ("The O.C.") guest-stars on April 30 and Mila Kunis ("That 70s Show") guest-stars on the May 7 season finale. RUN OF THE HOUSE also airs its season finale on April 30 with a sweet sixteen bash for Brooke (Margo Harshman).

On Sundays, CHARMED begins the sweep on May 2 when an overworked Paige (Rose McGowan) re-conjures Mr. Right (guest star Gabriel Olds) but unknowingly releases his evil twin, Mr. Wrong, who convinces Paige that killing Phoebe (Alyssa Milano) and Piper (Holly Marie Combs) is the only way she will ever be free. On May 9, the Charmed Ones find themselves on a demonic reality show, and in the two-hour season finale on May 16, the sisters are plunged into a mirror universe where good and evil are reversed.

The Sunday lineup continues on May 2, with a special recap episodes of the hit reality series HIGH SCHOOL REUNION, which will be hosted by Ananda Lewis ("The Ananda Lewis Show") and will wrap-up the reunion's life-changing events.

The WB will also present three hit feature films during the May sweep, including CRAZY/BEAUTIFUL, starring Kirsten Dunst, on Thursday, May 13, NEVER BEEN KISSED, starring Drew Barrymore, on Friday, May 21, and THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY, starring Cameron Diaz and Ben Stiller, on Sunday, May 23.
