'Numbers,' 'Magic' Near Midseason Orders at Cbs
By Brian Ford Sullivan (TFC)

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- Two of CBS' drama pilots that didn't make the network's fall schedule, "Numbers" and "Practical Magic," may be headed for midseason runs as several sources have confirmed the Eye has ordered three additional scripts from both series.

"Numbers," which comes from Paramount Network Television, stars David Krumholtz ("The Lyon's Den") as a mathematician at M.I.T. who's recruited by his F.B.I. agent brother (Gabriel Macht) to help solve crimes. Brothers Ridley and Tony Scott are behind the project, which was created by Cheryl Heuton and Nick Falacci ("Outfoxed"). Also starring in the pilot are Michael Rooker ("Days of Thunder") as a gruff F.B.I. special agent, Peter MacNichol ("Ally McBeal") as an M.I.T. professor who mentors Krumholtz's character, Alimi Ballard ("Dark Angel") as a young F.B.I. agent, Anna Deavere Smith ("The West Wing") as the head of the F.B.I. unit that works with Krumholtz's character and Navi Rawat ("The O.C.") as an East Indian M.I.T. grad student.

"Magic," which has also been developed under the titles "Sudbury" and "Colderon," stars Kim Delaney ("N.Y.P.D. Blue") and Jeri Ryan ("Boston Public") as two sisters who struggle with the blessing and curse of magical abilities. Warner Bros. Television and Sandra Bullock's Fortis Films are behind the project, which is executive produced by Becky Hartman-Edwards ("American Dreams"), Denise DiNovi ("The District") and Bullock herself ("The George Lopez Show"). Kat Dennings ("Raising Dad"), Esai Morales ("N.Y.P.D. Blue"), Dixie Carter ("Designing Women") and Shirley Knight ("Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood") also star.

It's not clear when a final decision about either project is expected to be made.
