ELVIS PRESLEY OFFICIALLY DRAFTED BY THE U.S. ARMY 47-YEARS AGO TODAY

March 24 -- Elvis Presley was officially drafted into the U.S. Army on March 24, 1958, 47 years ago today. He was inducted by the Memphis Draft Board and assigned the number 53310761. On March 25th, he received his now famous G.I. haircut at Fort Chaffee, Ark. Presley took his basic training at Fort Hood, Texas where he was stationed for six months. He was shipped to Germany on Sept. 19 and served there for 18 months, maintaining an off-base residence in Bad Nauheim, which he shared with his father, grandmother and some friends from Memphis. While in Germany, as is well-documented, he met Priscilla Beaulieu, whom he later married. Elvis served his country just like any other G.I., receiving no special privileges, and was officially discharged on March 5, 1960.

ELVIS, a new four-hour mini-series, created with the full cooperation and participation of the Elvis Presley Estate, will be broadcast as the "CBS Sunday Movie" Sunday, May 8 (9:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) and Wednesday, May 11 (8:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

Also coming in May will be ELVIS BY THE PRESLEYS, a new entertainment special that will feature a collection of new, intimate interviews with his former wife, Priscilla Beaulieu Presley, their daughter, Lisa Marie Presley and other family members, which will be broadcast Friday, May 13 (8:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. Exclusive, never-before-seen television performances, photographs from the Presley Estate archives and Presley family home movies will be broadcast for the first time.
