Spike TV Gets Ready for the Taxman With New Research on 'Men & Finances'

30% of Guys Pay Their Taxes At Least A Month Before They Are Due

Small Percentage (38%) of Men Expect to Rely on Social Security When They Retire

Men Are Conservative In How They Save, Preferring Savings Accounts and 401K/IRAs to Investing in Stocks and Bonds

NEW YORK, April 11 -- With Tax Day, April 15 rapidly approaching, Spike TV conducted some research looking into the habits and opinions about men and finances. Spike TV conducts and provides exclusive research results offering insight into the minds of today's men. Additional men's research topics the network has conducted include work, sports and leisure time.

On Making Money

-- 56% of men are the primary breadwinners for their household, the rest either have joint responsibility or someone else is the breadwinner.

-- Only 1/3 of guys (35%) say they're financially better off than their parents.

-- 68% of men are concerned about making ends meet.*

-- 57% expect to become wealthy in their lifetime.

On Paying Bills

-- Less than 1/2 of guys (47%) are primarily responsible for paying the bills, the rest share responsibility (32%) or have someone else do it (21%).

-- 66% of guys have paid at least one bill in their lifetime late.

-- Many guys are in debt: 41% have credit card debt; 41% car loans; 37% student loans; 36% home mortgage and 20% medical.

-- Online bill payment is becoming widespread with 63% of guys paying at least one bill online.

-- 80% of guys have credit cards, over 1/3 have three or more credit cards.

-- The average balance that guys carry on their credit card is $1840.

-- 30% of guys usually pay their taxes at least a month before they are due.

On Saving Money

-- Guys do save money, but aren't investors. The most popular ways that guys save are through: savings accounts (67%); 401k/IRA (41%); stock/bond funds (28%) and life insurance (28%).

-- More guys save for vacations (43%) than retirement (40%) or even kids' education (21%).

-- Guys save for a variety of reasons: emergency expenses (32%); car (31%); general luxuries (31%); home (29%) and their own education (23%).

-- 38% of guys expect to rely on Social Security when they retire.*
