AMC's Original Programming Momentum Continues With Two New Series in Development
Projects include: Ice (Christian Darren - Vadim Perlman) and Carter Beats the Devil (Wesley Strick)
New York, New York - June 16, 2008 - Top creative talent from both the television and film industries converge on AMC for a slate of two new scripted series. The new titles in development include: Ice, a dramatic series about diamond dealers in New York City, written by Christian Darren and to be directed by Vadim Perlman and Carter Beats the Devil, a fictional account of U.S. President Harding's mysterious death, written by Wesley Strick.
"AMC has built a reputation for creating original programming of the utmost cinematic quality, attracting some of the highest profile creative talent in the industry," stated Christina Wayne, AMC's senior vice president of scripted series and mini-series. "Teaming up with these talented individuals is a major investment toward driving the network's distinct brand. Each project is unique but all build on the network's mission to deliver compelling programming that stand side-by-side with the network's extensive library of classic films."
More about the series in development announced today:
Ice
Written by Christian Darren (Hustle: The Pete Rose Story), directed by Vadim Perlman (House of Sand and Fog, Life Before Her Eyes), and executive produced by Perlman and Ilan Breil/Mosaic. Ice is a drama that follows a family in the diamond district of New York City. Evan Pinchuk from New Frontier Films serves as co-executive producer.
Carter Beats the Devil
Written by Wesley Strick (The Saint, Mission: Impossible 2) and executive produced by John Baldecchi & Rich Silverman (Ultraviolet, The Mexican), this series is based on Glen David Gold's book, under the same moniker Carter Beats the Devil, which follows the magician Charles Carter and his role in President Warren Harding's suspicious death. Gold served as a consultant for this project.
AMC first broke into the original programming arena in 2006 with the award-winning mini-series, Broken Trail. The miniseries starring Robert Duvall and Thomas Hayden Church garnered record ratings for the network and scored 16 Emmy Nominations, including four wins for Outstanding Miniseries, Outstanding Lead Actor, Outstanding Supporting Actor, and Outstanding Casting for a Miniseries.
The network continued its original programming momentum in the summer of 2007 with its first original scripted series, Mad Men. The series won two Golden Globe awards, in 2007, including best television drama and received unprecedented accolades from the press, including being deemed "one of the best-written, all-around sparkling works to come along in many a summer season" by The Wall Street Journal. On July 27th at 10:00 PM EDT, AMC will premiere season two of the series.
Next from AMC was Breaking Bad, which premiered on the network in January of 2008. The series is created by Vince Gilligan (X-Files) and follows the story of a desperate man, played by Bryan Cranston (Malcolm in the Middle), who turns to a life of crime to secure his family's financial security. AMC announced in May, of this year, a second season for Breaking Bad.
