Awards Total To Eleven
Smash Hit "The Colbert Report" Scores First Emmy Win For Writing
Irreverent Animated Favorite "South Park" Receives Third Emmy Award
NEW YORK, Sept. 22 -- COMEDY CENTRAL earned three Emmy
Awards in the 2007-2008 Primetime Emmy Awards competition, it was announced
last night by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (ATAS).
Ten-time Emmy-winner (five times each for program and writing) "The
Daily Show with Jon Stewart" the network's unique news parody series, won
this year in one category: Outstanding Variety, Music Or Comedy Series.
This brings the grand total of Primetime Emmys for the "Daily Show" to
eleven and, with six consecutive wins for Program, breaks the "Late Show
with David Letterman's" standing record of five wins in a row. The program
is also a two-time winner of the prestigious Peabody(R) Award for
Excellence in Broadcasting.
"The Colbert Report," with Stephen Colbert assuming a dismissive, Bill
O'Reilly-like persona while commenting on the issues of the day, received
its first-ever Emmy Award: Outstanding Writing For A Variety, Music Or
Comedy Program. The show has been nominated in four major categories for
three years in a row and last spring, "The Colbert Report" won a
sought-after Peabody(R) Award for Excellence in Broadcasting.
Already a two-time Emmy-winner (with eight nominations) "South Park,"
the adult animation phenomenon that is home to Kyle, Stan, Kenny and
Cartman, received its third Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program, this
time For Programming One Hour or More, for the "Imaginationland" trilogy.
The irreverent show, now in its 12th season, remains COMEDY CENTRAL's
highest rated show.
The Emmy Awards were presented in two ceremonies. The first, primarily
for creative arts categories, took place on Saturday, September 13, while
the balance of the Emmys, primarily for the performing arts, were announced
before a black-tie audience during a primetime telecast (ABC) on Sunday,
September 21. Both ceremonies took place at the NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE in
