MYTHBUSTERS PUTS YOUTUBE-GENERATED MYTHS TO THE TEST IN SPECIAL APRIL 29 EPISODE
(Silver Spring, Md.) On the Wednesday, April 29 episode, the MYTHBUSTERS gang puts the "you" in YouTube, as they test viral videos sent in by fans via the Discovery Channel YouTube channel. Airing at 9PM ET/PT, the MYTHBUSTERS YouTube Special features exploding match heads, spinning muscle car tires -- and a humongous Lego ball of doom!
The MYTHBUSTERS special marks Discovery Channel's first program partnership initiative with YouTube. Discovery aired a series of spots beginning in September 2008, hosted by MYTHBUSTERS' Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman, that invited viewers to become a part of the myth-busting crew by posting their favorite viral videos to YouTube. The Discovery Channel YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/discoverychannel) is part of a Discovery Communications partnership designed to bring a robust collection of short form video from across Discovery's family of world-class network brands to an engaged global YouTube audience.
Over 200 videos were submitted along with several thousand comments to the MythBusters YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=290018A7BF3DC8FB). Said Savage, "We were inundated with suggestions Some were totally impossible to test, like cold fusion" Continued Hyneman, "Some of the suggestions were right up our alley."
For the MYTHBUSTERS YouTube Special, Adam and Jamie test if 30,000 match heads, a tin bucket and a slow burning fuse could create a huge fireball. Meanwhile, the Build Team take on an immensely popular viral video that features a giant ball of Lego rolling down the streets of San Francisco. In one of the team's biggest builds ever, the Build Team attempt to replicate the Lego sphere -- 7-feet in diameter and purportedly created from 5 million pieces -- and roll it down a hill, Indiana Jones style, into a parked car without doing any damage to the car. Finally, Adam and Jamie use a series of tests with a flexed-up muscle car to test a YouTube posting that says you can make a car tire catch fire if you spin it fast enough and long enough.
MYTHBUSTERS, currently in its seventh season, uses science to uncover the truth behind popular myths and legends. Hosted by Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage, and build team members Tory Belleci, Kari Byron and Grant Imahara, MYTHBUSTERS airs Wednesdays at 9PM ET/PT.
MYTHBUSTERS is produced for Discovery Channel by Beyond Productions. Dan Tapster is executive producer for Beyond Productions; Tracy Rudolph is supervising producer for Discovery Channel.
