G4 PRESENTS THE LATEST CRAZE IN ALTERNATIVE SPORTS WITH THE PREMIERE OF THE "BARCLAYCARD WORLD FREERUN CHAMPIONSHIPS 2009"
Athletes From Around The Globe Converge On London's Trafalgar Square To Compete In This Two-Hour Special Premiering Sunday, October 25th at 9:00pm ET/PT
Los Angeles, CA, October 22, 2009 G4, the network that brought extreme sports fans shows like "Ninja Warrior" and "Unbeatable Banzuke," brings viewers the next big thing in alternative athletics with the premiere of the "Barclaycard World Freerun Championships 2009." Staged in historic Trafalgar Square in London, the "Barclaycard World Freerunning Championships" attracts world-class free-run athletes from 17 different countries across 5 continents who compete in a form of urban acrobatics in which they scale, traverse and descend from every part of a city landscape in ways that seem impossible. Hosted by Attack of the Show's Kevin Pereira and Alison Haislip, the two-hour "Barclaycard World Freerun Championships 2009" event premieres on Sunday, October 25th at 9:00 PM, ET/PT, only on G4.
Part athlete, part acrobat and part animal, freerunners perform stunts that are downright out of the question. Freerunning began as an urban expression of freedom and athleticism in Paris in the 1980s and gained popularity after the release of the British documentary Jump Britain, where daredevils sprinted over London landmarks. Over the past three decades, larger and more diverse audiences have become familiar with the sport and it has become a mainstay in popular culture, from videogames like the Lara Croft Tomb Raider series to television shows like Heroes and Chuck to major box-office movies like Casino Royale.
Now in its second year, The Barclaycard World Freerun Championships is the foremost international competition for this rapidly expanding urban sport and the event attracted nearly 7000 fans to Trafalgar Square. G4's own Kevin Pereira and Alison Haislip traveled to London and caught all the action on their personal flipcams witnessing these urban athletes perform moves like the Crane Moonstep, The Kash Vault, 360 Wallhop, or the Palm Spin. The duo hit the streets to interview contestants about what it takes to perform these gravity defying acts, and sat with the judges to get the inside scoop on the four areas of scoring, which include technical difficulty, execution, creativity and fluidity. Kevin and Alison also interviewed the founder of the London-based freerunning group "Urban Freeflow" to get the history of the freerunning movement and Alison even gave the sport a shot herself when this crew of hard-core competitors took her out to attempt some basic moves.
G4 viewers can experience all the action of this exciting extreme international competition on Sunday, October 25th at 9:00 PM ET/PT.
