dick clark productions President Orly Adelson announced that Janet Jackson will kick off the 2009 "American Music Awards" with a special opening medley of her greatest hits. She will join other previously announced acts including Whitney Houston, Rihanna, Green Day, Shakira, Lil' Wayne, Mary J. Blige, Keith Urban, Lady Gaga, Eminem, Jay-Z, Alicia Keys, Jennifer Lopez, The Black Eyed Peas, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Daughtry and Adam Lambert. Additional performers and presenters will be announced in the coming weeks. The show will be broadcast live from the NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE on SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 22 (8:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT) on ABC. Janet Jackson has sold more than 100 million records worldwide and is one of the best-selling artists in contemporary music. For the first time ever, 33 of her global No. 1 hits, plus the newly recorded single, "Make Me," will be available on one album�"Number Ones." Set for release on November 17, "Number Ones" celebrates the career and artistry of one of the most successful and influential artists in music history. Among the album's many highlights is new single "Make Me," which was produced by Janet and Rodney Jerkins.

This will mark the fourth time Janet Jackson has performed on the American Music Awards, having previously performed "Control" in 1987, "Escapade" in 1990 and "Together Again" in 1998. Jackson is also a nine-time American Music Award winner, having won the award for Soul/R&B Single for "Nasty," as well as for Soul/R&B Video Female in 1987. Her hit "Miss You Much" garnered two nods in 1990 for Dance Single and Soul/R&B Single, and in 1991 she took home the prizes for Dance Artist, Pop/Rock Female and Soul/R&B Female. Jackson also earned an AMA in 1999 for Soul/R&B Female and in 2002 for Pop/Rock Female.

For the third year, winners will be determined by online voting at www.ama.abc.com, www.amavote.com and www.mycokerewards.com. Artists will be honored in the categories of Pop/Rock, Country, Rap/Hip-Hop, Soul/R&B, Alternative, Adult Contemporary, Latin and Contemporary Inspirational.
