LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- Discovery will kick off 2011 with five new original series, network sources have confirmed to the site exclusively.
The reality projects cover everything from a family-run airline to exotic animal reposessors to unique weapons dealers to free-roaming wild hogs to classic car restorers.
First out of the gate is "Arctic Air" (premiering Wednesday, January 5 at 9:00/8:00c), about the Twetos and their family-run airline, Era Alaska, "the lifeline for the isolated rural inhabitants of the Bering Sea coastline." The following week look for "Sons of Guns" (Wednesday, January 12 at 10:00/9:00c), which follows Will Hayden and his company, Red Jacket, considered "the nation's most unique weapons business."
That Sunday sees the launch of the previously announced "Hogs Wild" (Sunday, January 16 at 9:00/8:00c), which follows companies in Texas, Hawaii and Florida as they combat the escalating national problem of free-roaming wild hogs. Leading out of said hour is "Wild Animal Repo" (Sunday, January 16 at 10:00/9:00c), about Scott Lope, who's billed as "one of America's premier exotic animal reposessors." Lope was named Animal Planet's "Hero of the Year" in 2009.
And finally, rounding out the month is "Desert Car Kings" (Friday, January 28 at 9:00/8:00c). Said project revolves around the McClures and their Arizona-based family business, Desert Valley Auto Parts, which is devoted to restoring classic American cars.
Discovery however isn't quite done in 2009: "Get Out Alive" (premiering Monday, December 6 at 9:00/8:00c) features "the true stories of people who have been forced to confront their own mortality."
3 Ball Productions is behind "Arctic Air" while Film Garden Entertainment and True Entertainment produce "Hogs Wild" and "Desert Car Kings," respectively. "Repo," originally a Spike TV pilot, comes from The Jay and Tony Show. Auspices and production company information for the other projects could not be confirmed.
