New York, NY - May 3, 2012 - AMC announced today pilot orders for "Low Winter Sun" and the "Untitled LaGravenese & Goldwyn Project" marking the first time the network has greenlit two scripted pilots at the same time. "Low Winter Sun" is a co-production between Endemol Studios and AMC Studios. "Untitled LaGravenese & Goldwyn Project" will be produced by AMC Studios. The pilot orders continue to build on the network's programming strategy of creating original scripted series that serve passionate audiences with quality and distinction.
"Both of these shows represent an opportunity to continue what our existing scripted series have established so well - a commitment to great writing, and shows that tackle complex characters in a genuine and authentic way," said Joel Stillerman, AMC's EVP of original programming, production and digital content. "Richard and Tony have collaborated on an explosive piece of storytelling that explores race and capital punishment in a way that transcends the legal genre; and Chris has captured the strength and intensity of the source material to create a muscular, Detroit-based character piece that explores the themes of such diverse stories as Crime and Punishment and Heat."
"Low Winter Sun" is a contemporary story of murder, deception, revenge and corruption in a world where the line between cops and criminals is blurred. The story begins with the murder of a cop by a fellow Detroit detective. Seemingly the perfect crime, in reality the murder activates forces that will forever alter that detective's life and pull him into the heart of the Detroit underworld. The pilot is based on the 2006 two-part British mini-series written by Simon Donald and starring Mark Strong. The original award-winning mini-series was produced by Tiger Aspect Productions (an Endemol Company). Chris Mundy ("Criminal Minds," "Cold Case") will serve as writer, executive producer and showrunner on the series. Jeremy Gold, head of creative affairs for Endemol Studios, oversees the project with Greg Brenman, head of drama for Tiger Aspect. The project is represented by CAA.
"Untitled LaGravenese & Goldwyn Project" is a legal thriller with major political, personal and ethical stakes. It centers on a District Attorney who uncovers new evidence that prompts the reinvestigation of a sensational murder case. The series is an exploration of personal morality and how people struggle with the shades of grey found in the absence of a simple, ordered moral universe. "Untitled LaGravenese & Goldwyn Project" is from writer and executive producer Richard LaGravenese (The Fisher King, Water for Elephants, The Ref, The Bridges of Madison County). Tony Goldwyn ("Justified," "Damages," "Dexter," A Walk on the Moon) will serve as director and executive producer. Andrew Sugarman (Shopgirl, Conviction) will also be a co-executive producer.
AMC's Stillerman, Susie Fitzgerald, SVP of scripted development and current programming, and Jason Fisher, SVP of production, oversee the pilots' development and production for the network.
