E! BRINGS BIG RISKS, BIG REWARDS, AND A BIG RUSH OF "LA SUGAR" WHEN THE NEW ORIGINAL SPECIAL PREMIERES TUESDAY, JULY 30 AT 9:00 PM ET/PT
In Hollywood's Dessert Scene, Expectations are High and the Payoff is Sweet
Los Angeles, July 24, 2013 - E!'s original special LA Sugar explores one of Hollywood's hidden passions - stylish sweet treats - and the well-connected, creative people who craft them. With endless parties and premieres, the competition is fierce and the stakes are high. Every party planner worth their salt wants to feature attention-grabbing desserts that will have guests talking and leave them wanting more. When there's a craving for delicious sweets and only the best will do, celebs and civilians alike turn to the go-to teams known to cater to any whim and deliver above and beyond their clients' expectations. Taking viewers inside the competitive and always sweet worlds of Charm City Cakes West founder and Chef Duff Goldman; Jackie Sorkin of Hollywood Candy Girls; Rachel Crystal and Kassandra Workman's Sugar Babies Cupcakery; and Shoneji Robison and Catarah Hampshire of Southern Girl Desserts, LA Sugar premieres Tuesday, July 30 at 9:00pm ET/PT on E!
Clients of Chef Duff Goldman of Charm City Cakes West, like Victoria Beckham, Tina Fey, George Lucas and Jay Leno, know that his cakes are amongst the best in the business. In the special, Duff is up against a tough deadline when the daughter of actor and former N'Sync member Joey Fatone must have a monster of a cake made for her doting dad in time for his birthday. No task is too small for Duff and his team, but the timeframe may be! Instead of having two weeks' notice to plan, Duff needs to knock out a masterpiece in three days. When the decorating doesn't go quite as planned, Goldman feels even more pressure to get this one-of-a-kind birthday cake just right.
Jackie Sorkin, The Candy Queen and CEO of Hollywood Candy Girls, has a rainbow of confections to brighten up any event. Among the first to call on her talents was socialite and DJ Paris Hilton, but Jackie's sweet spot is creating real life candy lands for over-the-top kids parties with budgets in the tens of thousands of dollars. Somehow she must keep her rowdy crew in check while organizing a special party for a well-to-do 7-year-old, with a custom candy piece de resistance that will highlight her love of sparkles and butterflies. If Hollywood Candy Girls can get the edible sculpture (that weighs several hundred pounds) to the venue in one piece, they're golden!
Sisters and cofounders of Sugar Babies Cupcakery, Rachel Crystal and Kassandra Workman, may not agree on the right type of man to date, but they're on the same page when it comes to putting their all - and all their money - into their business. Now that their pink truck has become so popular in Los Angeles, they've opened a new storefront to expand their business. But juggling the shop and the truck is a difficult task, especially when they've just booked a huge high-profile event: The Arclight Films 10th Anniversary red carpet event. When Rachel needs to rush off an hour early to get to a big food truck event in the midst of preparing the custom cupcakes for the Arclight order, Kassandra goes into a tailspin and must dig deep to beat the ticking clock.
Southern Girl Desserts has had success with catering Giuliana Rancic's surprise baby shower, events for celebrities like Denzel and Pauletta Washington, and serving A-list celebrity customers like Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon. But a staff shortage, orders to be filled and many comforting cakes and cookies to be made has co-owner Shoneji Robison doing a slow burn when she thinks co-owner Catarah Hampshire isn't doing as much as she should be. Southern Girl Desserts are due to be served at an event called Stars For Stripes, a benefit gala to save wild tigers that's hosted by film director, actress and Hollywood royalty Alison Eastwood. But with just a few hours' notice, Catarah finds out all the desserts must be vegan, and the two have to think fast and figure out how to translate their down home, rich recipes into baked goods that would warm any vegan's heart.
