LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- The spin-offs are just beginning at The CW. Mark Pedowitz (President, The CW) confirmed two such efforts on "Arrow" and "Supernatural" during his executive session at the TCA Summer Press Tour. Much like "The Originals" - which spawned from a spring episode of "The Vampire Diaries" - the projects will have their seeds planted in upcoming episodes of their parent series rather than via a traditional pilot.
"We plan to introduce a reoccurring character and an origin story of Dr. Barry Allen, who as we now know is The Flash," he said about the upcoming season of "Arrow." "We're planning an origin story, we'll see how it goes and hopefully it will go on."
The CW is no stranger to the Flash character: Todd Komarnicki (Perfect Stranger) spearheaded the script for a potential small screen take in 2003 for the then WB. Pedowitz would later say a potential "Flash" series won't step on any toes in the feature world at Warner Bros. "We're good to go... there's no conflict."
Sticking with the DC universe, Pedowitz indicated that its Wonder Woman project "Amazon" is "on pause right now, the script isn't quite where we want it. It's an iconic DC character and we are not going to put it on unless it works." He added that with Black Canary and now The Flash getting their origin stories on "Arrow," it's better to wait and get it right."
As for "Supernatural's" child series, news of which broke during Comic-Con, Pedowitz affirmed that "it will be set in Chicago, there will be hunters, there will be monsters." Beyond that nothing is set in stone, such as if any current characters would make the transition. "It's designed to be planted and we'll see which way it goes."
Pedowitz also noted that with regards to "Supernatural," there could very well be a season 10 regardless of whether spin-off goes or not. "I would like 'Supernatural' to continue as long as it can continue, as long as they have great stories," he said.
Beyond the spin-off talk, Pedowitz reiterated the target for the final six-episode season of "Nikita" is still mid to late November. The first four episodes will air weekly with the final pair potentially as a two-hour swan song.
