DISCOVERY COMMUNICATIONS TO LAUNCH SPANISH-LANGUAGE SECONDARY AUDIO PROGRAMMING FOR DISCOVERY CHANNEL AND TLC
(Silver Spring, MD) Expanding its commitment to its growing U.S. Hispanic audiences, Discovery Communications, the world's #1 pay-TV programmer, announced today that the company's two flagship networks, Discovery and TLC, will offer Spanish-Language secondary audio programming (SAP) for a selection of top series. The SAP offerings, which will include top series from both networks, are slated to begin in May during primetime programming hours.
"It is critically important that Discovery's core mission of satisfying curiosity is inclusive of all viewers, including one of the fastest-growing demographics in the U.S," said Eileen O'Neill, group president, Discovery, Science Channel and Velocity. "Already reaching 19M U.S. Hispanic viewers, SAP affords our growing base of U.S. Hispanic viewers the opportunity to enjoy their favorite Discovery shows however they want to enjoy them, in either Spanish or English."
Both Discovery and TLC offer a robust slate of popular shows that resonates with Hispanic viewers. The networks' Hispanic fan base has consistently driven an increased number of series ranking within the weekly top 25 primetime cable premieres for English-Language Hispanic delivery, including TLC's The Little Couple, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo and Long Island Medium. In 2013, Discovery programming including Skywire Live: With Nik Wallenda, Naked and Afraid and North America drew large Hispanic audiences. The new SAP offering will complement Discovery Communications' two Spanish-Language networks already available to viewers in the U.S., Discovery en Español and Discovery Familia.
"TLC is all about storytelling with heart, acceptance and family values," said Marjorie Kaplan, group president, TLC and Animal Planet. "We know our Hispanic audience shares these same ideals and are delighted to now be able to make the content they love available in Spanish-Language secondary audio."
Additionally, Discovery and TLC will provide Spanish-Language closed captioning for all shows, which receive Spanish-Language secondary audio programming.
