New Research on Target Demo, Revealing "Upstander" Segment

NEW YORK - April 16, 2014 - Pivot, Participant Media's network targeting Millennials, age 18-34, today unveiled a robust development slate, and a greenlight for "Fortitude," a 12-episode Sky/Pivot original series starring Stanley Tucci, Michael Gambon, Sienna Guillory, and Luke Treadaway. The network also announced development on eleven projects from production companies including IAC's Electus, Universal Cable Productions, FremantleMedia North America/Pukeko Pictures, Funny or Die, and Eyeworks, and revealed premiere dates in the 2014-2015 television season for new and current series including an August 8 debut for the sophomore season of the quirky, coming-of-age comedy, "Please Like Me," and the comedy "Human Resources," and an October premiere for the docu-series "Welcome to Fairfax."

The announcements were made today by Pivot President, Evan Shapiro, who said, "Pivot's first slate established us as a programming brand of distinction, with uniquely original, high-quality series, specials and films. Our second slate demonstrates our significant investment in, and commitment to, groundbreaking content for the thought-leading segment of Generation Y we call 'Upstanders.' We believe that a story well told can change the world. Pivot's programming is meant to spark conversation among the very people most likely to create that change."

Executive Vice President of Original Programming for Pivot, Belisa Balaban, added, "We set the bar high this past year. The support from the creative community has been enormously gratifying. We are thrilled to be working with some of the most well-regarded producers and talent in the industry and look forward to showcasing both scripted and unscripted content that sets us apart from everything else on television."

Generation Why!

Pivot today released new research conducted in collaboration with Nielsen. Entitled the "Generation Why Segmentation Report," the study of more than three thousand adults 18-34 years old focuses on the lifestyles and attitudes of Millennials. The report demonstrates that Generation Y (Gen Y) is highly engaged in social causes and actively pursues a life of purpose. 79% say "meaningful work" is their number one factor in choosing a career, and 67% are interested or passionate about six or more social issues. The study goes on to identify three distinct segments of Gen Y, including a passionate and influential subset that is more engaged and brand-aware than their peers. This segment, whom Pivot calls "Upstanders," indicates that they are engaged in many more causes than other Millennials, passionate about 13 or more issues on average, more active across all social media, more willing than average to pay more for premium brands (73% vs. 59%), more likely than the norm to change brands based on a company's values (78% vs. 62%), watch more TV across all platforms, and expect their TV to take on important issues.

Pivot also unveiled a study from Rentrak that showed Pivot's branded content inside "TakePart Live," and across all its platforms, outperformed other efforts in the genre.

A detailed report on the 2014 Nielsen study, "Generation Why Segmentation," is available on Tumblr at pivotupstanders.com.
