MTV CHRONICLES THE LIVES OF FOUR YOUNG AMERICAN SOLIDERS AS THEY RETURN FROM AFGHANISTAN IN SPECIAL VETERAN'S DAY DOCUMENTARY "MTV'S GOT YOUR 6"
"Got Your 6" Premieres on Veterans Day, Tuesday, November 11 at 5 p.m. ET/PT In Partnership with Leading Veteran's Advocacy Organization, Got Your 6
New York, NY (October 23, 2014) - MTV today announced the premiere of a new, Millennial veteran-focused documentary, "MTV's Got Your 6," that seeks to shine a light on the unique experiences of young soldiers and Marines returning home from active duty. "MTV's Got Your 6" will premiere on Veterans Day, Tuesday, November 11 at 5:00 p.m. ET/PT, in partnership with leading veteran empowerment campaign, Got Your 6. Additionally, MTV will commemorate and cover Veterans Day from a unique Millennial perspective all day, on-air and across its editorial and social platforms in an effort to leverage attention to post-911 servicemen and women.
With over one million Americans deployed and now returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, this urgent and timely topic is one that political leaders, communities and families are increasingly pressed to address. Using profound and heart-stopping GoPro footage shot by the soldiers and Marines themselves on the ground in Afghanistan, the documentary takes viewers to the front lines of what these individuals experienced overseas and how that has impacted the men they are today. Additionally, candid interviews and footage from their daily routines as they transition to life stateside will provide a rare and unfiltered look at the extraordinary sacrifices our soldiers and Marines make for the love of their country.
Derived from the noble military jargon that means, "I've got your back," "MTV's Got Your 6" documentary follows the individual stories of four young soldiers and Marines from across the country as they return from Afghanistan and settle back into their communities and lives away from the front lines. Viewers will see that for these soldiers and Marines, and countless others, the immediate relief from the stress of combat upon returning home is replaced with new stressors and obstacles. While the hurdles of post-traumatic stress disorder, broken relationships and anxiety haunt these young men, they remain positive and hopeful as to what their future's hold. Throughout the documentary, viewers will see the power of friendships, family and community and the roles they play in helping these soldiers settle back into civilian life.
"MTV's Got Your 6" profiles the lives of the following veterans:
· Dustin (25, Stephenville, TX) - A Corporal with the U.S. Marine Corps, Dustin was spared severe injury and possible death when a young Afghani boy warned him of a landmine. He's eager to join a local EMT training program in hopes of becoming a firefighter for his small town.
· Chris (25, Orlando, FL) - Chris is a U.S. Marine Corps veteran whose wife gave birth to his son while he was in Afghanistan. He named his son after his best friend and fellow soldier who died in combat.
· Tim "TJ" (22, Sun Valley, CA) - The recipient of a Purple Heart for injuries sustained in combat, Tim draws strength from his fellow veterans and friends in his community. Military service runs in his family as his father and grandfather both served.
· Geoffrey (25, Lancaster, PA) - Currently a military recruiter, Geoffrey would jump at the chance to return to combat if the opportunity arose. For now, he's busy planning his wedding with his fiancé whom he credits with keeping him grounded upon his return from the war.
"MTV's Got Your 6" will drive viewers to a custom resource hub where they will be able to hear more stories from other veterans and learn how to help empower our returning service members. Additionally, viewers will be able to access help resources specifically designed for veterans and their loved ones through Half of Us, mtvU and the Jed Foundation's campaign to improve emotional health.
