BAD NEWS (ABC, New!) - Dana Klein ("Friends with Better Lives") has sold a single-camera comedy to the Alphabet about "a hard-hitting and well-respected NYC news anchor who, after being fired, is forced to take a job as a human interest reporter at a fifth-rate news station in small-town Nebraska." Said effort, which has a penalty attached, comes from 20th Century Fox Television with Aaron Kaplan of Kapital Entertainment also executive producing. (Deadline.com)
DROP, THE (The CW, New!) - Writer Kyle Jarrow (A Very Merry Unauthorized Children's Scientology Pageant) and director R.J. Cutler ("Nashville") are set to team for a new drama at the netlet about "a Miami DJ teetering on the edge of ruin who finds hope (and more) in a gifted protégé who is female and African-American, both rarities in the EDM world." CBS Television Studios-based The Kennedy/Marshall Company is behind the hour with Frank Marshall and Robert Zotnowski as well as Steve Angello, a member of former electronic music group Swedish House Mafia, also executive producing. PARADISO (FOX, New!) - Cirque du Soleil Media has received a script commitment from the network for a new drama about "a girl pursuing her dream of performing at the Paradiso, the most glamorous nightclub in San Lorenzo (a fictional but contemporary city based on 1950s Havana). Once there, her bold personality will win her both friends and enemies in this politically charged world." Jacques Méthé and Gillian Ferrabee will also executive produce the project, which has a penalty attached, for 20th Century Fox Television. (Deadline.com)
SHOOTER (USA/Paramount/UCP; W: John Hlavin; D: Simon Cellan Jones) - Emily Rios ("Breaking Bad") has been cast in the book-turned-feature-turned-drama pilot, about Bob Lee Swagger (Ryan Phillippe), an off-the-grid former Marine sniper who is coaxed into action to thwart the killing of the President. Ultimately double-crossed and framed for the attempt, he must call upon all the skills he acquired as a decorated Marine sharpshooter to avoid capture while hunting down and exposing the traitors who set him up. She'll play Nadine Memphis, "an ambitious young FBI agent who unravels a conspiracy with Swagger at the center that puts a target on her back and forces her to form an uneasy alliance with him." (Deadline.com)
UNTITLED RICK SINGER PROJECT (FOX, New!) - Dan Fogelman ("Galavant") and Rick Singer ("Younger") are set to team for a potential drama at the network about "a young female pitcher who defies the odds to become the first woman to compete in professional baseball." The project, from 20th Century Fox Television, has a put pilot commitment. Tony Bill and Helen Bartlett also serve as executive producers. (Deadline.com)

Grant has signed on for a yet-to-be-revealed role on "Game of Thrones" (THR.com); Meghan Ory will reprise her role of Ruby on "Once Upon a Time" during the first half of the new season (TVLine.com); and Madeline Brewer will drop by "Grimm" as "a fierce lieutenant in an up-and-coming Wesen street gang who is raising hell in Portland" (TVLine.com).
