INVESTIGATION DISCOVERY AND GLAMOUR SELECT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SURVIVOR BEVERLY GOODEN AS RECIPIENT OF THE 2015 INSPIRE A DIFFERENCE "EVERYDAY HERO" AWARD

- Gooden, Who Started the Viral Social Media Movement #WhyIStayed, Will Be Honored at Third Annual INSPIRE A DIFFERENCE Honors Event in New York City on Thursday, October 22 -

(New York, N.Y.) - America's leading crime and justice network, Investigation Discovery (ID), and Glamour magazine announced today the selection of domestic violence survivor and founder of the #WhyIStayed social media movement Beverly Gooden as the 2015 winner of the annual INSPIRE A DIFFERENCE "Everyday Hero" award. ID's multiplatform public affairs campaign, INSPIRE A DIFFERENCE, is designed to inform a national dialogue around topics such as domestic violence, abuse, bullying, and civil rights, while encouraging viewers to take action and make a difference in the lives of others.

After responding to a national call-to-action featured in Glamour this past summer, Gooden was selected as this year's "Everyday Hero" from hundreds of nominations. Her story received national attention following the September 2014 video of Ray Rice's assault on Janay Rice, when Gooden felt compelled to speak out against victim shaming, and tweeted her own personal experiences with domestic violence, using the hashtag #WhyIStayed. Gooden began the viral social media movement to support victims of abuse and ultimately change the national conversation about victim blaming and public shaming. Gooden encouraged others survivors to share their emotional stories using #WhyIStayed, which quickly trended on Twitter and has since been tweeted more than 700,00 times.

Gooden also is the founder of the Ella Mae Foundation, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to take a stand against the epidemic of violence against women. By providing aid in the form of toiletries, first-aid kits, and clothing, the Ella Mae Foundation strives to create awareness about domestic violence and identify moral and practical approaches to curb it progressively.

In addition to Gooden, ID and Glamour will honor three celebrities and their charity partners for their commitment to raising awareness and providing resources and education to victims of crime and social injustices at the INSPIRE A DIFFERENCE honors event. The 2015 celebrity honorees are Grace Gealey (Saving Our Daughters), Angie Harmon (UNICEF), and AnnaLynne McCord (The New Somaly Mam Fund: Voices for Change).
