SCIENTISTS CRASH SPACE MISSION'S MOTHERSHIP INTO A COMET IN "DEATH ON A COMET: THE ROSETTA MISSION" SEPT. 30 AT 10PM
- Special Hosted by Dr. Dan Riskin Premieres on Science Channel the Day of the Crash -
(New York) - Science Channel audiences have a front row seat to the final chapter of the Rosetta spacecraft's historic mission in DEATH ON A COMET: THE ROSETTA MISSION on Sept. 30 at 10PM, the same day Rosetta is scheduled to crash into Comet 67P, the celestial body it was sent to study. Hosted by science journalist Dr. Dan Riskin, DEATH ON A COMET: THE ROSETTA MISSION captures the extraordinary event, providing a conclusion to the remarkable twelve year journey - not only to understand how comets work, but also to investigate how comets could have played a crucial role in the evolution of life on Earth.
In 2014, Science Channel viewers witnessed a remarkable feat of technology as the Rosetta probe first encountered Comet 67P in the network's special Landing on a Comet - Rosetta Mission. The final chapter, DEATH ON A COMET: THE ROSETTA MISSION, will capture the emotion of this journey's end as Rosetta gathers the last bit of science from the comet and beams it back to Earth before its mission-ending crash. Philae didn't land properly in 2014 and was lost, but was recently discovered as Rosetta began its death crash orbit toward comet 67P, and is featured in the special.
"This is one of the most exciting space missions of 2016, and Science Channel is there to provide compelling and immediate coverage of the biggest science stories in the news," said Marc Etkind, General Manager of Science Channel.
Through interviews with experts that include the scientists and engineers that contributed to Rosetta's legendary mission, DEATH ON A COMET: THE ROSETTA MISSION reveals the learnings that Rosetta uncovered in its two-year investigation, including:
Photographs of the comet, up close and personal
What comets smell like (rotten eggs and marzipan)
The deep science on how comets form in the outer reaches of the solar system
The finding of other-worldly, "heavy" water on Comet 67P's surface
The composition of this comet's atmosphere
What causes the dramatic comet tails to form
The sizable discovery of organic molecules on the comet, which many scientists believe could be the ultimate cause of how life evolved here on Earth
DEATH ON A COMET: THE ROSETTA MISSION is produced for Science Channel by Exploration Production Inc (EPI), who also produced the international award-winning Landing on a Comet - Rosetta Mission. For EPI, Kelly McKeown is executive producer. For Science Channel, Kyle McCabe is executive producer with Lindsey Foster Blumberg as producer, and Michelle Irei as coordinating producer.
