SCIENCE CHANNEL'S "SCIENCE SUPER HEROES" INITIATIVE HONORS WOMEN TRANSFORMING "STEM" IN CELEBRATION OF WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH

(New York) - In celebration of Women's History Month, Science Channel is recognizing two women in March as part of its ongoing Science Super Heroes initiative. This month's Science Super Heroes are Debbie Sterling, the Founder and CEO of GoldieBlox, the award-winning children's multimedia company that empowers girls to build their confidence, dreams and futures, and Olivia Pavco-Giaccia, the Founder and CEO of LabCandy, the social enterprise venture that aims to get young girls more interested in science through fun and colorful lab gear, and age-appropriate storybooks.

"Science Channel supports diversity and inclusion in STEM and honors the innovative and courageous women who are transforming these fields and forging paths for future generations," said Marc Etkind, General Manager of Science Channel. "I can't think of a better way to celebrate Women's History Month than to honor the female Science Super Heroes that are influencing conversations and trends on a local, national, and global level."

Science Super Heroes, launched by Science Channel in October 2016, is committed to igniting passion for science and encouraging the next generation of innovators, problem solvers, and game changers. Science Channel crowns individuals each month who have used science to make a difference in their community. Science Super Heroes are nominated monthly from any of the following categories: Super Star (CEO or professional), Shooting Star (super fan), and Rising Star (college student). Each Science Super Hero is highlighted on-air on Science Channel the first Thursday of the month and across all Science Channel social platforms for the entire month. Shooting Stars and Rising Stars receive a $2,000.00 gift card to Global Giving where they can donate to a charity of choice. Super Stars work with Science Channel representatives to mentor and foster science-minded youth in their community.

Super Star Debbie Sterling is the Founder and CEO of GoldieBlox. The award-winning children's multimedia company has disrupted the pink aisle in toy stores globally and challenged gender stereotypes with the world's first girl engineer character. As an engineer and entrepreneur, Sterling is a leader in the movement for empowering girls to build their confidence, dreams, and futures in science fields. Sterling was named TIME's "Person of the Moment," honored by the National Retail Foundation as one of the 25 "People Shaping Retail's Future," and was recently named to Fortune Magazine's "40 Under 40" list. In 2015, Sterling was inducted as a Presidential Ambassador for Global Entrepreneurship and honored by the National Women's History Museum with a "Living Legacy" Award for her work to empower girls around the world. Sterling is a Stanford University graduate with a degree in engineering.

Rising Star Olivia Pavco-Giaccia is passionate about the synergies between science, entrepreneurship, and girl-centric activism that impact both local and national conversations. Pavco-Giaccia spearheaded LabCandy while finishing her degree in Cognitive Science from Yale University, where she was selected as the youngest-ever fellow at Yale's Entrepreneurial Institute. Her first book Ava & The Copper Key was awarded a Gold Medal by Moonbeam Children's Book awards. In 2015, Pavco-Giaccia was named one of Glamour Magazine's "Top 10 College Women of 2015" and HerCampus's "22 Under 22 Most Inspiring College Women." She was recently named as a national innovator for positive change by NationSwell and received an "Upstart Award" from Bustle.
