Netflix announces new original series set in 1950s Brazil, "Coisa Mais Linda"

Featuring one of the most remarkable eras in Brazilian history as its backdrop, the period drama series begins production in 2018

São Paulo, November 6, 2017 - Netflix, the world's leading internet entertainment service, today announced production of a new Brazilian original series, Coisa Mais Linda, slated to begin filming in 2018. Set in the late 1950s and early 1960s during the birth and cultural revolution of Bossa Nova in Rio de Janeiro, the series is a romantic period drama that brings a golden era in the country's history to the forefront.

"We're eager to continue investing in the incredible storytelling Brazil has to offer, and our partners at Prodigo Films have captured just that with Coisa Mais Linda," said Erik Barmack, Netflix VP of International Original Content. "Apart from being set to a vibrant time in Brazilian culture, the series tells a broader story about self-discovery, the pursuit of dreams and the emancipation of women that will be incredibly relevant to our audiences both in Brazil and globally."

Coisa Mais Linda follows Maria Luiza, a conservative, dutiful woman who has always depended on her father, Ademar, and her husband, Pedro. When Pedro disappears, she must travel from São Paulo to Rio, where her husband had planned to open a fancy restaurant. Against her better judgment --and to the chagrin of her strict father-- Maria Luiza decides to stay in Rio and dedicate herself to turning Pedro's property into a Bossa Nova club. It's this decision that marks the start of a passion-driven transformation in Maria Luiza, one that is influenced by liberal and feminist new friends, as well as a renewed chance at love.

An original series produced by Prodigo Films for Netflix, Coisa Mais Linda will feature eight one-hour episodes in its first season. The series was created by Heather Roth and Giuliano Cedroni, and written by Pati Corso and Leo Moreira. The producers are Beto Gauss, Francesco Civita and Caito Ortiz.

Coisa Mais Linda joins a diverse slate of Netflix original productions out of Brazil. In 2018, Netflix will premiere the second season of 3%, plus two new original series: O Mecanismo, created by José Padilha (Narcos, Elite Squad 1 & 2) in partnership with Elena Soarez (Xingu, Sons of Carnival) and starring Selton Mello, along with the sitcom Samantha! starring Emanuelle Arajo and Douglas Silva. This lineup of original content includes documentaries such as Laerte-se, and stand-up comedy specials featuring Felipe Neto, Marco Luque and Clarice Falcão, in addition to the recently announced specials recording between now and next March with Rafinha Bastos and Edmilson Filho.
