The bandits are coming to Netflix: O Cangaceiro do Futuro, a new comedy series wraps production

São Paulo, February 24, 2022 - Watch your back, Lampião! There's a new bandit on the scene. This Thursday (24), Netflix announced yet another Brazilian show: the comedy O Cangaceiro do Futuro, starring Edmilson Filho and also featuring Chandelly Braz, Dudu Azevedo, Frank Menezes, Fábio Lago, Evaldo Macarrão, Haroldo Guimarães, Max Petterson, Valéria Vitoriano, Solange Teixeira and Carri Costa. Filming took place in the town of Quixadá, in Ceará, and wrapped in São Paulo. The show is expected to be released in the second half of 2022.

In the show, Virguley (Edmilson Filho) is a jack-of-all-trades always getting into trouble and trying to make ends meet in São Paulo, and who dreams of returning home to the Northeast as a rich man. Between jobs, he takes advantage of his resemblance to Lampião to put on shows in public in São Paulo. One day, after getting into yet another sticky situation - he gets smacked in the ear and ends up all the way back in 1927, in the midst of the bandit era, where the locals take him for the real Lampião. Taking advantage of the confusion, Virguley gathers a gang like none other, falls in love with Mariá (Chandelly Braz) and becomes a powerful man in the town. But since nothing in the life of this scoundrel good-for-nothing is easy, the story will have lots of twists and turns, including the true King of the Bandits showing up to put an end to this tale.

The show was created by Ceará native Halder Gomez. "It's a joy to bring a cultural and historical icon from the Northeast to the rest of Brazil and the world. The era of these outlaws is an endless source of inspiration, and I've long wanted to create a comedy about this moment in time. The show revives some of the most famous characters in the rural Northeast, and they collide with modern survival, as represented by Virguley. And it's funny and original! To have a project like this take place in Ceará - one with a financial, cultural and artistic impact as well as one that benefits tourism - takes me back to the beginning of my career when I dreamed of having Hollywood at home so that I would never have to leave my country," he says.

O Cangaceiro do Futuro was also directed by de Halder Gomes and Glauber Filho and was written by Chico Amorim, Paulo Leierer, Clara Deak and Halder Gomes. Produced by Mayra Lucas and Carolina Alckimin, of GLAZ Entertainment, the show will have seven episodes, each approximately 30 minutes long.
