Featuring Exclusive Interviews with Major League Baseball Legends

LOS ANGELES - FOX Sports Films, in partnership with Religion of Sports, announces a new original documentary THE GAME THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING: YANKEES VS. RED SOX '04 ALCS chronicling the unforgettable Major League Baseball (MLB) American League Championship Series (ALCS) matchup between storied rivals the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox that led to the historic curse-breaking Boston title win in 2004.
Premiering Wednesday, Oct. 18 on FS1, following the network's live coverage of Game 3 of the ALCS, the film invites audiences on a journey through time to relive some of the most pivotal moments of the thrilling series as told through the baseball legends who lived through it all, including FOX Sports' own Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter and David Ortiz, along with Mariano Rivera, Johnny Damon, Kevin Millar, Dave Roberts, and Orlando Cabrera. THE GAME THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING: YANKEES VS. RED SOX '04 ALCS is the second documentary to premiere as part of the FOX Sports and Religion of Sports multi-year film deal announced earlier this year.
"FOX Sports is thrilled to commemorate one of the most iconic stories in baseball as retold through varying perspectives of some of the best players and sports personalities in Major League Baseball," said Barry Nugent, Vice President, Development and Original Programming, FOX Sports. "As FOX is the exclusive home of the ALCS this post-season, we're excited to present a never-before-seen interpretation of arguably one of the greatest games in ALCS history to reignite fan enthusiasm behind this iconic series."
The film shines a spotlight on Game 4 of the 2004 ALCS, the major turning point in the series, when the Yankees were on the brink of celebration as the Red Sox trailed the series at an 0-3 deficit. When all hope seemed lost at Fenway Park for the Red Sox in the ninth inning, a perfect storm was brewing against the Yankees. While the Yankees employed a winning strategy and a Hall of Fame closer Mariano Rivera to clench the series, they watched in pure disbelief as Game 4 slowly slipped away and along with it a 150-year history of dominating the Red Sox.
In a dramatic storybook ending, the Red Sox made an epic comeback to win Game 4, shattering the Yankees' dream to directly move on to the World Series. The Red Sox eventually went on to sweep the St. Louis Cardinals for their first World Series title in 86 years. Finally putting an end to the "Curse of the Bambino."
"Religion of Sports is excited to turn a magnifying glass on one of the most remarkable games in baseball history," said Victor Buhler, Senior Vice President, Production and Head of Development, Religion of Sports. "The margins between victory and defeat in baseball are so slim: a runner beats a throw by half a second; a hit flies off the barrel of a bat; a ball slips underneath a glove. Director Liam Hughes takes us back into the drama of Game 4 of the 2004 ALCS and, even though we know the outcome, he has found a new way for us to relive the game. For over eight decades, the Yankees always edged out the Red Sox. But this famous night in October changed that. It was truly a game that changed everything."
To this day, Yankees players and fans still question what exactly happened as no MLB team had ever lost a Postseason series after going up 3 games to none. The film gives fans another opportunity to revisit the iconic series, and what transpired in a game that ultimately changed everything. Whether viewed as an epic thrilling come-from-behind moment or a devastating monumental defeat, THE GAME THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING: YANKEES VS. RED SOX '04 ALCS is more than a baseball story. It's a legendary tale of extraordinary grit, the power of determination, continued perseverance, teamwork, and that the seemingly impossible can be reversed in a split second.
The 2004 ALCS series between the Yankees and Red Sox is crowned as one of the greatest come-from-behind stories and one of the most epic losses in baseball history. Through exclusive interviews from both Red Sox and Yankees camps alike, the film provides insider perspectives on the many electrifying moments captured throughout the series including a rare glimpse into the core group of Yankees speaking candidly on their unexpected defeat. The film will also feature exclusive soundbites and interviews with baseball luminaries and representatives from both organizations to reflect on the series' lasting impact on the two iconic franchises.
THE GAME THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING: YANKEES VS. RED SOX '04 ALCS is executive produced by Gotham Chopra, Ameeth Sankaran, and Victor Buhler of Religion of Sports. Eric Shanks, Mark Silverman, Charlie Dixon and Barry Nugent from FOX Sports also serve as executive producers. The film is co-produced by FOX Sports Films, Religion of Sports, and MLB and is directed by Liam Hughes. David Check, Carl Hansen, Ariana Rotstein and Michael Vayder serve as producers.
