Netflix Brings a Fresh Wave of Diverse Indonesian Stories to Your Screen in 2025
Netflix Indonesia is thrilled to share its lineup of local films and series for 2025. With a wide range of genres - from thrillers and comedy to drama - we're as committed as ever to keep entertaining our members with quality local storytelling.
This year we're ramping up our collaboration with the best talent across the Indonesian entertainment industry, expanding our partnership with more local creators and production houses to develop a variety of films and series.
Malobika Banerji, Senior Director of Content, Southeast Asia, Netflix, stated, "Since launching in Indonesia in 2016, we've learned that Indonesian viewers crave daring and authentic stories with best in class production. That's why this year we are more committed than ever to continue to partner with talented Indonesian filmmakers, actors, and crew to bring more of the local stories our members love."
This year, Netflix will release its first collaboration with director Ernest Prakasa through The Actor (Lupa Daratan), a comedy-drama film about an egocentric actor who, on the cusp of landing the lead role in a prestige biopic, suddenly finds himself stripped of his acting abilities. The film stars Vino G. Bastian, Agus Kuncoro and Dea Panendra.
"I am happy that my newest story can be realized through the work of the best talents, especially Vino G. Bastian who turned out to be hilarious and was a fun partner during the production of Lupa Daratan Through the collaboration with Netflix, hopefully this story can continue to travel and be accepted by audiences around the world," said Prakasa.
The first zombie film from Netflix Indonesia, The Elixir (Abadi Nan Jaya), comes from director Kimo Stamboel. Following the story of a potion that ends up triggering a zombie outbreak due to the ambition of a herbal medicine company's owner, the film stars Donny Damara, Mikha Tambayong, Eva Celia, Dimas Anggara, Kiki Narendra and Marthino Lio.
Kimo said, "This is the first time I have directed a zombie-themed film and I am very proud as the film presents horror elements while introducing and elevating Indonesian culture to the international scene. I believe Netflix provided us with an excellent playing space."
The Most Beautiful Girl in the World brings together Reza Rahadian (Reuben) and Sheila Dara Aisha (Kiara) in a romantic comedy film set in the working world, directed by Robert Ronny from Paragon Pictures. The film tells the story of a pampered lone heir of a media tycoon who stages a dating show to earn his inheritance by granting his father's last wish: for his son to marry the most beautiful girl in the world.
"I am thrilled that by collaborating with Netflix this story could come true as a film," said Robert. "It carries a number of serious issues such as the deconstruction of love in the modern era, the meaning of love and beauty, but it is also a romantic comedy to make it more relatable for the audience. Hopefully this can be a starting point to discuss these complex issues."
From Paragon Pictures also comes Losmen Bu Broto: The Series, adapted from the legendary film of the same name, with a story about the Broto family who manages an inn in Yogyakarta. Feeling underappreciated, the youngest child faces a challenge as he tries to prove himself, only to fall for an older, married guest. The series stars Mathias Muchus, Maudy Koesnaedi, Baskara Mahendra, Wulan Guritno and more Indonesian actors.
"When we got the rights to this IP, we spent years developing character arcs and story continuity for the series. For now the focus is on the character Tarjo. We are making a very contemporary story and hopefully a heartwarming family story, as there is nothing more important than family," said Robert Ronny.
Adapted from the best-selling novel by Habiburrahman El Shirazy, Promised Hearts (Setetes Embun Cinta Niyala) stars Deva Mahenra, Beby Tsabina, and Caitlin Halderman. The film follows Niyala (Beby Tsabina) who, after realizing her dream of becoming a doctor, has to submit to an arranged marriage and accept that her childhood friend whom she loves will marry someone else. This marks Netflix's first collaboration with the established local film company MD Entertainment.
"I can't wait for this film to be watched by Indonesians and international audiences alike when it comes out on Netflix," said producer Manoj Punjabi. "There is an element of romance here. I believe love is very universal and that makes this religious drama film a relatable story. Moreover, Deva emphasized that he really wanted to be involved in this project. He said, 'It's special to me'."
The drama and psychological film A Normal Woman, from director Lucky Kuswandi, is about a meek housewife who starts to spiral into madness when she believes she has contracted a mysterious, incurable disease. The film stars Marissa Anita, Dion Wiyoko, and Gisella Anastasia.
"The film is my first collaboration with Netflix through my own film company, and I really look forward to our next collaborations," Lucky said, referring to Soda Machine Films as his new film company together with producer Kevin Ryan. "The story was inspired from my own experience when I was researching chronic pain and autoimmune diseases. Our body knows when something is wrong with the way we live our lives and it will tell us so we can live a little more authentically."
Telling the story of four Indonesian immigrant women, each with their distinct personalities, trying to build a new home in Queens, New York, ratu ratu queens: the series centers on the initial meeting of the characters who charmed viewers in the 2021 film Ali & Ratu Ratu Queens. Bringing together Nirina Zubir, Asri Welas, Happy Salma, and Tika Panggabean, the series is packed with a friendship story that will warm audiences' hearts.
"One of the hearts of the film Ali & Ratu Ratu Queens is the queens, the Indonesian working class immigrants aged 30s to 40s. We give them the spotlight in the series. We believe their unique personalities, slice of life stories, friendships, as well as their happy and sad moments will find a place in the hearts of Indonesian audiences," said producer Muhammad Zaidy.
From the Big Screen to Your Home
In addition to original titles, Netflix will also have a variety of Indonesian films that have smashed records in cinemas. Audiences can enjoy more than 50 Indonesian movies throughout the year and rewatch their favorites from the comfort of home.
