Sunday Primetime (7:00-11:00 p.m.)
ABC earned a strong second place on Sunday to Fox's coverage of the final game for the 2007 World Series (Boston-Colorado - Game 4) in Total Viewers (13.5 million) and Adults 18-49 (5.0/13). ABC once again was the definitive Sunday night leader across the key women demographics: W18-34 (5.1/15), W18-49 (6.6/17) and W25-54 (7.3/17).
Despite facing Fox's World Series coverage, ABC grew its Sunday delivery for the third consecutive week, producing its top numbers on the evening since season premiere Sunday (9/30/07) in Total Viewers and Adults 18-49.
In Total Viewers and Adults 18-49, ABC aired Sunday's Top 3 entertainment series for the second straight week, including "Desperate Housewives," "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" and "Brothers & Sisters."
"America's Funniest Home Videos" (7:00-8:00 p.m.)
Opposite Fox's NFL and MLB coverage during the 7 o'clock hour, ABC's "America's Funniest Home Videos" took second place in Adults 18-49 (2.7/8-tie), logging a new season high. Giving ABC a strong foothold during the opening hour of Sunday's prime, "AFV" built audience throughout its telecast, surging by 2.3 million viewers (8.0 million to 10.3 million) and by 35% in Adults 18-49 (2.3/7 to 3.1/9) from its first half-hour to its second half-hour.
Despite stiff competition, "America's Funniest Home Videos" attracted its largest audience (9.2 million) in more than 7 months and tied its top Adult 18-49 rating (2.7/8) in over 6 months since 3/4/07 and 4/1/07, respectively.
"Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" (8:00-9:00 p.m.)
During the 8 o'clock hour, ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" was the biggest "non-sports" draw, besting its nearest competitor (CBS) in the time slot by 4.7 million viewers (14.1 million vs. 9.4 million) and by 132% in Adults 18-49 (5.1/13 vs. 2.2/6).
Growing its overall audience for the third week in a row, "Home Edition" matched its top Adult 18-49 rating a more than 7 months, while delivering its highest ratings across each of the men demos since the same date since 3/4/07.
"Desperate Housewives" (9:00-10:00 p.m.)
Sunday's No. 1 TV series for the fifth straight week in viewers and young adults, ABC's "Desperate Housewives" ranked a No. 1 during the 9 o'clock hour in Adults 18-49 against Fox's World Series coverage (7.1/16 vs. 6.8/15 preliminary "fast affiliate" average for Fox). "Desperate Housewives" towered over its drama competition in the hour, "Cold Case," topping the CBS series by 6.4 million viewers (18.1 million vs. 11.7 million) and by 137% in Adults 18-49 (7.1/16 vs. 3.0/7).
"Brothers & Sisters" (10:00-11:00 p.m.)
ABC's "Brothers & Sisters" beat out its drama competition during Sunday's 10 o'clock hour, CBS' "Shark," by 2.5 million viewers (12.8 million vs. 10.3 million) and by 122% in Adults 18-49 (5.1/13 vs. 2.3/6). The ABC sophomore drama won the hour, beating the World Series, across each of the key women demographics: W18-34 (5.8/16), W18-49 (7.2/18) and W25-54 (8.0/18).
"Brothers & Sisters" hit a season-high among Adults 18-49, the series' highest rating in the key young adult sales demo since last November since 11/19/06.
A note about increasing DVR penetration and year to year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating trends based on the Live + Same Day data stream may be somewhat distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has more than doubled from nearly 9% during the same point in 2006 to more than 20% currently. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. Therefore, the only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.
