WEEK No. 8:
It was a close race for first place during the week (w/o 11/12/07) among Adults 18-49, as ABC (3.3/9), CBS (3.3/9) and Fox (3.4/9) all delivered a 9 audience share, while Fox held a slight advantage in rating. It's certainly worth noting that Fox's weekly standings and averages were inflated by a high-rated NFL overrun on Sunday into the first hour of primetime. ABC ranked No. 1 for the 8th consecutive week this season across the key women demographics: W18-34 (3.6/10), W18-49 (4.4/11) and W25-54 (5.1/12).
Rankings: ABC's "Dancing with the Stars" and "Grey's Anatomy" were the No. 1 TV shows for the week in Total Viewers and Adults 18-49, respectively. In fact the Net aired 3 of the Top 4 most-watched television programs overall: "Dancing with the Stars-MON" No. 1, "Grey's Anatomy" No. 3 and "Dancing with the Stars the Results-TU" No. 4. ABC placed 6 of the Top 20 television shows in Adults 18-49: "Grey's Anatomy" No. 1, "Dancing with the Stars-MON" No. 7, "American Music Awards" No. 10, "Samantha Who?" No. 17, while "Private Practice" and "DWTS the Results-TU" tied at No. 20. ABC's "Samantha Who?" and "Private Practice" ranked as the Top 2 new series in both Total Viewers and Adults 18-49.
A note about increasing DVR penetration and year to year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating trends based on the Live + Same Day data stream may be somewhat distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has more than doubled from 10% during the same point in 2006 up to 21% currently. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. Therefore, the only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.
