WEEK No. 11:
ABC took second place during the week to an NFL-boosted CBS in Total Viewers (8.8 million) and across the adult demographics: AD18-34 (2.3/7), AD18-49 (2.9/8-tie) and AD25-54 (3.3/8-tie). CBS received a substantial boost to its weekly averages from Sunday's high-rated NFL overrun (New England-Pittsburgh) into prime. ABC marked its 11th consecutive week as the No. 1 net across the key women demographics: W18-34 (3.2/9), W18-49 (3.8/10) and W25-54 (4.3/10).
ABC was up from the year-ago week (w/o 12/4/06) by 5% in Total Viewers (8.8 million vs. 8.4 million) and by 5% in Adults 18-34 (2.3/7 vs. 2.2/7), while holding all of its Adult 18-49 audience year to year.
Rankings: ABC aired 6 of the Top 20 TV programs of the week in Adults 18-49, including the No. 1 series with "Grey's Anatomy": "Grey's Anatomy" No. 1, "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" and "Barbara Walters Presents the 10 Most Fascinating People of 2007" tied at No. 7, "Private Practice" No. 14, "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town" No. 18 and "ABC Premiere Event-Oprah Winfrey Presents: Mitch Albom's For One More Day" No. 20. The Net placed 3 shows in the week's Top 10 among Total Viewers: "Grey's Anatomy" No. 2, "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" No. 6 and "ABC Premiere Event-Oprah Winfrey Presents: Mitch Albom's For One More Day" No. 9. In addition to ranking the highest-rated series in Adults 18-49, ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" was also the week's top series in Adults 18-34, Adults 25-54 and across key women (W18-34/W18-49/W25-54). ABC's "Private Practice" qualified as the week's No. 1 freshman series in viewers and young adults.
A note about increasing DVR penetration and year to year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating trends based on the Live + Same Day data stream may be somewhat distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, nearly doubling from over 11% during the same point in 2006 up to more than 21% currently. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. Therefore, the only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.
