"AFV" was up from its year-ago season opener in both Total Viewers (+7% - 9.1 million vs. 8.5 million) and Adults 18-49 (+4% - 2.7/8 vs. 2.6/8), drawing the series' biggest season premiere audience in 7 years and matching its highest young adult rating in 6 years since 2001 and 2002, respectively, when the show aired on Friday nights.
"Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" (8:00-9:00 p.m.)
Building sharply on its lead-in, "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" ranked as the No. 1 entertainment program during the 8 o'clock hour with Total Viewers (11.7 million) and Adults 18-49 (3.8/10), besting competition on CBS ("Amazing Race") and Fox ("The Simpsons"/"King of the Hill"). A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to 28% currently, from 20% at the same point in 2007. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.
