Sunday Primetime (7:00-11:00 p.m.)
Opposite a highly-rated NFL game on NBC's "Sunday Night Football" (Cowboys-Redskins) and CBS with another enormous primetime NFL overrun (Chargers-Steelers) leading into "60 Minutes" with the first post-election interview with President Elect Barack Obama, ABC won Sunday by solid margins among Women 18-34 (+11% - 3.9/10 vs. 3.5/9 - NBC) and Women 18-49 (+14% - 4.9/12 vs. 4.3/10 - CBS). In fact ABC marked its 8th consecutive Sunday this season at No. 1 in Women 18-49. ABC defeated fourth-place Fox with its "animation domination" lineup on Sunday night by 4.4 million viewers (11.1 million vs. 6.7 million) and by 26% in Adults 18-49 (3.9/9 vs. 3.1/7).
Despite increased NBC and CBS competition on the night week to week, ABC was up over the prior Sunday in both Viewers (11.1 million vs. 11.0 million) and Adults 18-49 (3.9/9 vs. 3.8/9).
For the 8th consecutive Sunday this season, ABC's "Desperate Housewives" stood as the evening's most-watched entertainment program. "Housewives" tallied its 7th time in 8 weeks as Sunday's highest-rated entertainment series with Adults 18-49.
"Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" (8:00-9:00 p.m.)
Jumping from its lead-in, "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" topped its entertainment competition the time period on Fox ("The Simpsons"/"King of the Hill") by 2.4 million viewers (10.2 million vs. 7.8 million). Overcoming NBC's NFL game, "Home Edition" took second place in its time period in key Women demos: W18-49 (4.3/10) and W25-54 (4.7/10).
"Desperate Housewives" (9:00-10:00 p.m.)
ABC's "Desperate Housewives" was the definitive entertainment choice in its 9 o'clock time slot in Total Viewers (16.6 million) and Adults 18-49 (6.1/13), overshadowing CBS' "Amazing Race"/ "Cold Case" combo by 4.7 million viewers and by 110% in Adults 18-49 (11.9 million & 2.9/6) and Fox's animated comedies by 8.9 million viewers and by 65% in Adults 18-49 ("Family Guy"/"American Dad" 7.7 million & 3.7/8).
In Total Viewers and Adults 18-49, "Desperate Housewives" turned in best-since-premiere results since 9/28/08.
"Brothers & Sisters" (10:00-11:00 p.m.)
Competing against NBC's "Sunday Night Football," ABC's "Brothers & Sisters" ranked No. 1 during Sunday's 10 o'clock hour for the 8th straight week in key Women 18-49 (5.2/13) and Women 25-54 (5.6/13). Once again the No. 1 non-sports show in the slot among young adults, "Brothers & Sisters" defeated its CBS drama competition in the hour ("Cold Case"/"The Unit") by 32% in Adults 18-49 (3.7/9 vs. 2.8/7).
A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to 28% currently, from 21% at the same point in 2007. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.
