WEEK No. 21:
For the 2nd consecutive week ABC earned second to Fox among Adults 18-34, outpacing both CBS and NBC by 47% (2.5/8 vs. 1.7/5 CBS and NBC tied). Also during the week (w/o 2/9/09), ABC held wide advantages over NBC in Total Viewers (+19% - 7.6 million vs. 6.4 million) and Adults 18-49 (+29% - 2.7/7 vs. 2.1/6).
ABC's numbers were up over the same week last year (w/o 2/11/08) by 9% in Total Viewers (7.6 million vs. 7.0 million) and by 17% in Adults 18-49 (2.7/7 vs. 2.3/6). ABC has been up or even with the year-ago frame in Adults 18-49 on 5 of 6 weeks since the beginning of 2009.
Rankings: ABC aired 5 of the week's Top 12 TV shows in Adults 18-49, including the Top 3 scripted series with "Grey's," "Private Practice" and "Housewives": "Grey's Anatomy" No. 3, "Private Practice" No. 4, "Desperate Housewives" No. 5, "Lost" No. 10 and "The Bachelor" No. 12. ABC's "Private Practice" registered as the week's No. 1 10 o'clock show on any net in Adults 18-49, for the 2nd week in a row.
A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to 30% currently, from 23% at the same point in 2008. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.
