Wednesday Night (8:00-11:00 p.m.)
ABC took second place to Fox on Wednesday night in Total Viewers (7.2 million) and Adults 18-49 (2.4/7), with its strongest summer Wednesday in 2 years on both Nielsen measures since 6/6/07.
"Wipeout" (8:00-10:00 p.m.)
An extended edition of ABC's "Wipeout" placed a highly-competitive second to Fox's 8:00-10:00 p.m. time period regular "So You Think You Can Dance" in Total Viewers (8.4 million) and Adults 18-49 (2.9/9). In fact ABC put up its best-ever viewer and young adult numbers against any 2-hour Wednesday edition of "So You Think You Can Dance" (the Fox show premiered in Summer '05). For the 3rd straight week, ABC's broad-appealing unscripted series placed No. 1 in its time slot across all key Men demos (M18-34 2.4/8, M18-49 3.1/10 and M25-54 3.3/10) and Teens 12-17 (2.3/9). "Wipeout" was also once again the highest-rated broadcast program in its slot with Kids 2-11 (2.9/11).
For the 2nd week in a row, "Wipeout" qualified as Wednesday's No. 1 TV show across the key Men demographics and among Teens 12-17.
"Wipeout" produced ABC's biggest summer numbers in the 2-hour Wednesday time period since July 2005 among Total Viewers, Men 18-34 and Teens 12-17, while posting its highest non-sports Men 18-49 rating since September 2002 since 7/13/05 and 9/11/02, respectively.
"Wipeout" hit season-highs in Men 18-49, Men 18-34 and Kids 2-11.
A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to 31% currently, from 25% at the same point in 2008. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight
next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.
