CONAN O'BRIEN WINS THE LATE-NIGHT WEEK OF SEPT. 28-OCT. 2 IN 18-49 OVER ALL CABLE AND BROADCAST COMPETITION
JIMMY FALLON ALSO DELIVERS BIGGER 18-49 AUDIENCES THAN ANY CABLE OR BROADCAST RIVAL AT 12:35 A.M.
UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. � October 8, 2009 � NBC's "The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien" has topped all broadcast and cable competition for the week of September 28-October 2, leading the 11:35 p.m. ET hour in the key late-night demographic of adults 18-49.
At 12:35 a.m. ET, "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" also delivered more adult 18-49 viewers than any cable or broadcast competition in the time period, while tying CBS's "Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson" in adult 18-49 rating points during the hour.
Versus the prior week, when CBS's "Late Show with David Letterman" benefited from guest appearances by President Obama and former President Clinton, Conan increased his 18-49 audience last week by 11 percent (1.435 million vs. 1.292 million), while "Late Show's" 18-49 viewership declined by 17 percent (1.372 million vs. 1.655 million). In total viewers, Conan was also up week-to-week by 11 percent (2.667 million vs. 2.399), while "Late Show" was down 12 percent (4.425 million vs. 5.044 million).
"Tonight" dominated "Late Show" last week in the younger half of the key 18-49 demo, adults 18-34, delivering a 47 percent margin of victory. At 12:35 a.m. ET, Jimmy Fallon outscored "Late Late Show" in this valuable demo by a 38 percent margin. For the week, Conan and Jimmy also beat both the ABC and CBS time-period competition in women 18-34, men 18-34 and men 18-49.
Conan and Jimmy ranked #1 or tied for #1 in adult 18-49 rating versus the CBS competition on four of five nights last week, falling behind in rating points only on Thursday night.
The median age of Conan's audience last week was 47.2, more than eight years younger than "Nightline's" 55.4 and more than 10 years younger than Letterman's 57.5. At 12:35 a.m. ET, the median age of Jimmy Fallon's audience (45.4) was six years younger than Kimmel's (51.4) and seven years younger than Ferguson's (52.7).
For the week of September 28-October 2, Conan's average 1.435 million adults 18-49 out-delivered the 1.372 of Letterman; in total viewers, Conan's audience of 2.667 million persons trailed Letterman's 4.425 million; and in adults 18-34, Conan's 698,000 million topped Letterman's 474,000. At 12:35 a.m. ET, Jimmy Fallon's 816,000 adults 18-49 for the week out-scored Ferguson's 789,000; in total viewers, Jimmy's 1.426 million finished behind Ferguson's 1.935 million; and in adults 18-34, Jimmy's 411,000 topped Ferguson's 298,000.
