WEEK No. 6:
During the week of October 26, 2009, which included the first 4 nights of the November Sweep, ABC finished No. 2 to a sports-fueled Fox (w/Games 1-4 of the World Series and a big Sunday NFL Vikings-Packers overrun) across each of the key Adult demographics: AD18-34 (2.2/7), AD18-49 (2.7/8) and AD25-54 (3.3/8). In Adults 18-49, ABC (2.7/8) topped third-place CBS by 17% (2.3/6) and fourth-place NBC by 42% (1.9/5). The Net beat its broadcast competition on Monday and finished as the No. 1 non-sports network on Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday. In fact season to date excluding sports, ABC stands as the No. 1 TV network among Adults 18-49 (3.2/9 tied w/Fox), leading CBS by 3% (3.1/8) and NBC by 45% (2.2/6).
ABC grew its overall audience for the 3rd straight week, registering its strongest performance in 4 weeks in Total Viewers (9.5 million) and Adults 18-49 (2.7/8) since w/o 9/28/09.
Opposite "Leno," ABC's scripted series are up in the 10:00 p.m. hour year to year. On average through 6 weeks this season (Most Current), ABC is up in the 10 o'clock hour with its scripted series programming against "Leno" by +16% in the key Adult 18-49 sales demo (2.9/8 vs. 2.5/7), over its Monday-Thursday performance last year at this point with scripted programming. The Net is up or even on all 4 nights where it programs scripted series in the 10:00 p.m. hour opposite "Leno": Monday - "Castle" +13%, Tuesday - "the forgotten" +10% and Thursday - "Private Practice" +47%, while on Wednesday "Eastwick" is holding even year to year. In fact on advertiser-coveted Thursday night, ABC's "Private Practice" stands as TV's No. 1 10 o'clock series on any network this season.
Rankings: ABC claimed 7 of the week's Top 20 shows in Adults 18-49, including TV's Top 2 scripted programs with "Grey's Anatomy" (top for 5th time in 6 weeks) and "Desperate Housewives": "Grey's Anatomy" No. 6, "Desperate Housewives" No. 8, "Modern Family" No. 12, "Dancing with the Stars" and "Private Practice" tied at No. 15 and "Home Edition" and "Brothers & Sisters" tied at No. 20. ABC aired TV's Top 4 freshman series during the week with Adults 18-49, with "Modern Family," "Cougar Town," "FlashForward" and "The Middle," respectively.
A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to 33% currently, from 28% at the same point in 2008. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.
